I ran a water droplet photography session for my local Camera Club the other evening, and it seemed to go down with members quite well.
I used my old Splashart MKII water drop controller (which no longer seems to be made), and my Canon 80D along with Sigma 105 f/2.8 Macro lens and a flashgun.
I’d have hoped to have let other club members have a go, but the water drop controller used a Canon style remote release jack, which doesn’t fit Nikon DSLRs. I’m unsure if adaptors are available?

Some Nikon DSLRs use a circular 10-pin connector, some use a rectangular connector (8-pin?). There are third party remote release devices out there and I have seen at least one (Hähnel Captur) that came with connector cables for the two Nikon types. Alas, those cables had a male jack plug for the remote, you need an adapter for the two male jacks as well. You should be able to find a female-female connector for connecting two male jack pins.
