suggestions for post processing a moon photograph

Hello, I would like to learn more about how to process images in darktable. Specifically, images like this moon picture I took this week.

I will reply with my attempt at post processing.
Any advice / suggested workflows are appreciated!

I would deblur a lot, put a lot a contrast, and also add colors:

Nice! We have some cabin time in the mountains coming up, was thinking of doing something very similar.

Here’s my take. Only a control-point curve, classical s-shaped to put just the tonality I wanted in the terrain. A crop to put that crater with the splay lines about on the right-hand thirds line. Bit-o-sharpen. Really, looks pretty much like your rendition:

Thank your for sharing this.
Very cool! I like that you were able to pull up more contrast in the small craters, making them more visible. Much more detail is showing.
Was it the color balance RGB - GRADING module that pulled this detail up?

You should download the xmp file, create a duplicate, the apply that xmp file, then you can see the edits for yourself!

Yes is usually use 2 instance of color balance rgb,

  • one for saturation and contrast
  • one for color grading

Also I used color equalizer to saturate almost all the colors and shift the orange and yellow towards red

I didn’t feel the need to do a lot with this. But I added texture and lens deblur using the diffuse or sharpen module in DT 5.1. I didn’t want to make the moon contrasty just because I could. I prefer the softer contrast look which feels more natural to my eyes.

I like how you cropped it. It somehow turns it into more than just a photo of the moon.

I agree that @Dito_Budi didn’t fall into the obvious dead centre crop and his picture looks better for the off centre approach.
