Sunset on the car ferry

This a shot from our summer holiday. It was taken on the car ferry from Ancona (Italy) to Split (Croatia), right after leaving Ancona.

I kinda know how to process this situation with DT, but I’m really curious, what you can do with this sunset. And hopefully I can learn something new on the way!

So, have fun with this pic.

The version above is the camera JPEG as I didn’t want to lead into a certain direction with my edit.

I had a lot of similar picture from this summer, here’s my result :

Thanks for your image. My attempt using DT4.4.2.

I really wanted to lift the detail of the high cirrus clouds - but couldn’t find a way to do so.

My slightly abstracted version. ART 1.20.2

Resized post-export in XnView MP because I forgot to resize in ART before export and I didn’t want to wait again on the time the massive motion blur in the water takes on my little laptop. :slight_smile:

Warning – If your computer isn’t fast and you want to load this in ART, you might want to lower this value in the arp sidecar first:

[Smoothing]
Enabled=true
Mode_1=4
Channel_1=2
Radius_1=359

I just slammed it over and didn’t try anything less, which might have worked just as well.

Hello,

Here’s my colorful interpretation, bordering on monochrome.

Nice! I think that works :+1:

I did try to fit the colors into complementary, but I’m not so happy with it. Anyways, take a look here…

Also I tried to enhance the clouds, but it brought out some ugly dirt (?) or dust artefacts. So overall I’m not too happy with this play.

Appreciate the time you all took to post your version of my boring picture. I had a look, how you all mastered the sun … and the common solution is sigmoid. And I think too, that this is the easiest way to get a nice and smooth sunset. I think it is a bit too smooth for my taste, but trying to bring out the sun ball, makes some ugly yellow bands visible. So I also took the sigmoid approach.

I noticed that… had to have a serious play with “Highlight Reconstruction” to minimize the banding around the sun ball before sigmoid.

I really do like your version - you have definition in the clouds which is what I was trying (but failed) to do.

I’ve added an instance of the “RGB Color Balance” module to your edition.
I’ve also reinforced the light beams with the colorize module.
Here’s another proposal.

I added a blue gradient filter to soften the effect.

I agree with you, what I like about your edition is precisely the softness of the sky.

Thanks again for sharing this shot, it gives us the opportunity to be creative.

When I went to see the image, the ferry door was closed.
I could only see it through the door lock: :grinning:
