Support for Apple ProRAW (DNG)?

Any word on whether this may be coming? While 'tis frustratingly hard to even get the iPhone to transfer raw files to a Windows PC, was able to do it using a 3rd party tool (iMazing). The result was a DNG file. Viewable/editable in DigiKam (as is .heic), but not yet in dt. Saw the thread back when it was first introduced, but wondering if there has been subsequent work done to make this readable by dt and if it may be in the Xmas release?

Habe a look at https://github.com/darktable-org/darktable/wiki/Camera-support
Unless someone provides samples it won’t be supported

Samples are there… Support is not implemented yet.

In following the bread crumbs from the links above, came across this post:
https://github.com/darktable-org/darktable/issues/10661
Which refers to being a darktable readable format under Win 11, but not Linux.
Does it work in Win 11? And therefore is an OS thing? (I’m still on Win 10).

Not that my phone is the preferred capture device, but it would be very good to have editing access (beyond jpg) for those pics when it is the only camera I have with! Not a big fan of having two raw editors to master!

It shouldn’t AFAIK.

Santa was good and gave me half of my Xmas list - dt 3.8 now reads heic from iPhone!

And interestingly, the DNG moved from the phone reads and is editable in my crusty old version of Lightroom (5.7), which sloth prevented me from deleting from my system after I got more comfortable with dt.

I know it’s basically in the title of this post, but I just want to stress that there’s no thing as “Apple ProRaw”. They’re just straight DNG 1.6 spec files. So I guess it’s a matter of DNG 1.6 support which includes very cool features like Semantic Segmentation Masks. I truly wish there’ll be support for capturing these multi exposure linear DNG files in Android too soon.

Not really 1.6 per se, more a matter of supporting a not-so-common lossless JPEG mode that Apple chose for their implementation. That mode has been in the DNG spec forever, just never really used…

There’s another catch there. At least according to this page on kirkville.com the Apple ProRAW format is alreay demosaiced. See also this page from Apple’s developer site.

In other words, it’s not the raw sensor data anymore, so cannot be treated as a raw file would be.

I’m not sure what that means in terms of darktable camera support, but it makes me wonder whether uploading images to https://raw.pixls.us/ is useful.

Note that this has nothing to do with the DNG format per se, support for that is a different matter.

EDIT: The github issue referred to by @kmilos links to two issues in Rawtherapee, which might be useful

Demosaiced LinearRaw DNG files are not uncommon and are supported by dt. This is purely a compression mode implementation issue.

The adventurous are welcome to try this rawspeed patch.
