Thank you for being here! (How to research image organization?)

I’m reading here to get back up to speed to do photography again and i just want to say thank you for being here!

In just a couple hours between here and youtube I’ve learned that I want to try to learn krita for post-raw editing. Now to look at darktable again to see if I’m game to learn that again or use rawtherapee. I can’t remember what I did before. Post was the limiting factor for me, but I’m having some small mental health improvements and want to try again.

I’m also going to try to learn how people organize their images. I plan to use digikam for this. How should I search for this topic? Organization is difficult for me, but I certainly see the value in it.

Maybe it would be easier to learn one tool. Darktable can be used to organise images, and its selective editing tools often make further post-processing unnecessary for me. RawTherapee and ART also support selective editing now.
In darktable, I have 2 - 3 styles which I can quickly apply to an image, adjust brightness and be done for many images (RawTherapee and ART also have similar features). The aim is not to get lost between the dozens of modules / tools in each application.

Welcome back!

I don’t have much to say on organisation. It’s always been a bit of a challenge for me. I eventually settled on a simple folder structure. Each memory card ‘dump’ goes in a folder named like this (e.g.) “2023-12-04 XX cars, circus, visit to Sydney”
XX is two letters indicating to me which camera I used.

And then I do use the star rating system in darktable to sort out the better shots.
FYI, I did an article about my use of dt a little while ago - https://www.35mmc.com/17/04/2023/darktable-mini-review-a-quick-look-at-my-favorite-software-by-stevenson-gawen/

Might give you a few ideas.

Welcome back. I am a darktable devoted myself, but I realise there are other good programs to consider. If exploring darktable I would suggest the sigmoid module is easier to work with than the filmic default. Good luck with your mental health and photography is a good therapy for us all. Hmm, maybe that is why they came up with the name RawTherapee.

BTW, I use DT to import and copy my photos into folders based upon date and even include the jobcode which is the location or other description. DT fulfils my organisation needs, but I appreciate that other specialist programs may suit some people better.
