Thanks for export masks feature in darktable

I would like to thank to person who implemented this feature.
I played with it recently and it makes things a lot easier and fun.

E.g. i tried to salvage this photo i took when i first tried to do some portraits with new K5IIs camera (and manual M50 f1.4 lens).

I let you decide if it looks better now…

Certainly does look better now!

Can you share how you created the mask to export?

Thanks!

Thank you.
I created quick path in drawn mask tab and applied some feathering (for the mask to follow edges).

Then in export module i choose tiff and store masks option.

you can see the example in s7habo’s video @5.55

And then you have used the tiff with the mask as layer in e.g. GIMP to replace the background?

Indeed, i opened the tiff in bitmap editor (masks were additional layers) and used another image as background. I wasn’t precise enough with mask in darktable, so on few places i tweaked the mask a bit in bitmap editor.
( I used different bitmap editor tho but that’s not so important, you can use krita/gimp for the bg replacement or to convert the multi-page tiff to different format as e.g. psd for use in bitmap editors which don’t support such tiff file. I did also patialy copy hair from left side to the right as there were lacking volume there. )

The reverse approach is possible too. You can e.g. misuse the watermark module to bring different image to darktable.
I used it here for sky replacement here: Colour Grading Exercise - #30 by danny

Thanks for your quick answer and for mentioning the reverse approach too.
