“Nice of Tom to put in a disclaimer that gifts from the Extremely Large Telescope will not influence his review of it. It makes me much more inclined to buying my ridiculously big telescopes from the Extremely Large Telescope people.”
Thanks for this very nice video. It is instructive to see how much engineering it takes to implement a simple principle, and how they have thought about everything to keep these mirrors working well for decades.
I have recently read Lost in Math by Sabine Hossenfelder, which is about the current crisis of particle physics. It is nice to see that astrophysics is still about taking models to data.
P.S.: Also, I am never ever going to complain about lens cleaning again. My problems humble compared to keeping a huge precision built mirror clean in the desert.
