On the Effectiveness of Visible Watermarks:
Interesting. Anyone who watermarks their photos should have a clear idea in mind as to what they hope to achieve with the watermarks, and should also have decided whether they will pursue legal remedies if their photos are plagiarized in this fashion.
Well, it doesn’t take a research scientist to develop these techniques; only to confirm existing ones. Certain unlicensed distributors and fans have been doing this with increasing sophistication for as long as human beings have had art, media, technology and cultural rivalries.

gmic → repair → inpaint [multi-scale]
Indeed. I did some experiments a few years ago and the simpler non-opaque watermarks were easy to remove in Gimp using the right combination of layer modes (actually, some layer mode algebra ;)).
This said, if watermarking can make it difficult to use the picture elsewhere (but some people will shamelessly use a watermarked picture as is), they can’t be a proof of authorship since anyone can add a watermark on any picture, and with some care you can even add a watermark on an already watermarked picture and make it quite impossible to determine which watermark came first.
And even more important: It’s butt ugly and ruins the nice photo.
