This is one of those pictures where I have absolutely no idea if I made something nice or something meh. Definitely a tough one. Here’s my attempts. Went for neutral color in one and an orangey dark feel in the other. Added exposure around the people, I felt it gave them more focus and gave the feeling they’re exploring the dark.

What a cool picture. The location looks very nice. Also some technical challenges in the image, thanks for the play!

I kept the color atmosphere and played with colors a bit:

Hello,
Here’s my proposal, following Boris’s tutorial
In this case, I think two things play a role.
chromatic aberration:
You can recognize it very well in the lower part of the picture where the intense light is reflected by the snow.

This can be partially corrected with the chromatic aberration module by switching on “very large chromatic aberration”, increasing strength and using “darken only” in this case:

Out of gamut blue in highlights caused by LED lamps.
If you are using Filmic, you can move the highlights sa…
I tried to highlight the contrasting lights at night.

This interpretation is my favorite. The atmosphere has been preserved, blue coldness up front, and still a warm idyllic background.

Thanks for the image, Charlie. It was an interesting challenge, as others have observed.
I’ve tried to bring the leading group forward from the rest of the image by increasing the luma and chroma contrast between the two areas.

Cool image!
A lot of the new darktable features work very well here. I used sigmoid attenuation, guided laplacian highlight reconstruction, and some diffuse/sharpen halation to deal with the headlamps (darktable 4.6.0)
