Thumbnail view and Tags not refreshing (Digikam Problem)

Hello,
Generally before I started tagging my work I had very little problem wih Digikam. In general I run three programs, digikam 8.6 which was flatpak installed, rapid photo downloader 0.9.36 which was installed via the software manager
of linux mint 22.1 and darktable 5.01 which was also installed with the latest flatpak.

The issue is that when I add tags to my photos every so often I lose the tag display in thumbnails view but when viewing the properties tab the tags show up at the bottom. Also the menubar disappears. I restarted the application
and the menus came back but the tags are still not visible under thumbnails.

Furthermore, I can do searches on any tag combination I want and the query returns accurate results without tag descriptions in thumbnail view.

I have tried for the last three days everthing under the sun that I found in the manual
and google which associates with the issue. That is from simple stuff such as checking configre digicam->settings->views->icons->show digikam tags to monitoring the sqlite database putting in tag data.
Nothing fixes the thumbnail view/tag problem.

Finally I rebuilt the hard drive with a clean install of everything. At first all was well. I put in tags for around 800 photos. All tags stayed in tact. Then kaboom every tag I put in dissappeared under thumbnails but stayed in tact under
properties. I had a hunch I knew what I did and tried it on the test machine. It happened again on the test machine several times.

The steps to reproduce is to are:

  1. Apply to a photo wih various tags, using the assign tag form. and then immediately mouse over to the thumbnail screen without hitting the apply button.
  2. An error message comes up saying that you assigned tags and do I want to apply to all.
  3. I say no
  4. Then I select some of the photos on the thumbnail screen and return to the assign tags form (all tags items from the previous tag selection are still there.)
  5. I hit the apply button and bang all tags under thumbnails of every album do not redisplay and the menu diappears.

I tried to put tags for a photo which already had tags displaying in properties, but no change.
Similarly, I tried to put in tags to photos that never had any tags. Again no tag display under thumbnails but properties brings them back and they are in the database.

Anyone know how to redisplay tags under these circumstaces in thumbnail view without a full reinstall? Refreshing thumbnails does not do anything.

Where would I find the fixed dowload? I have downloaded both the latest appimage and flatpak and they both do the same thing in concerns to this post.

Do you have another application running that might be touching the tags?

Are tags saved in JPEGs or XMP files?

You can use “exiftool” to check if the tags at still in those files.
