After a reinstall of darktable, I can’t access the image tags (in lighttable → tagging)
I screwed up my Kubuntu system and had to make a complete reinstall. The image files and their .xmp files are on a separate disk - so they were not affected. But my darktable files (in ~/.config/darktable/.) were gone.
Fortunately, I had some older versions on another computer which are a good starting point to restore my dt setup to it’s previous state.
But when I run the reinstalled darktable, I see that the “tag” category list does not include my recent tag-categories. I know that the tags themselves are stored in the .xmp files, and I looked at a few .xmp files to confirm
E.g. one .xmp file includes this: rdf:Bag rdf:liProject|ArtBook|Night</rdf:li>
But in darktable, no such tree (with “ArtBook” and “Night”) is displayed. Instead, dt displays another tag (which is not in the .xmp file).
Can anyone help me how to restore darktable’s tag categories automatically / or manual, from the entries in the .xmp files?
Thank you!
An option. Backup your current library.db, then rename to library.old. Open dt, it should have an empty library, and use the add to library to add your images. Dt will read the xmp and create all the tags.
It worked! Thank you!
But I’m wondering, why it didn’t work in my first attempt, because (I think!) this was pretty much exactly what I did before.
After the new Linux&DT install, I assume the library was empty. Then I imported all my pictures, folder by folder - but the tags were missing in DT. Now, after renaming the library, and importing everything again, it works: the tags are there! I don’t understand what I could have possibly done different in my first re-install. But in any case, I’m very happy right now! Thanks again!
No, I used “add to library” in both cases.
At the present point, I have given up to understand what went wrong in my first attempt. Now, I’m just happy to be able to use darktable as I always did.
