I do not generally shoot JPG, and when I do it is not often that I try to process the material. However, in a recent rebuild I found a small number of JPG images in the system that are misplaced due to an absence of a correct date.

Due to the metadata these files are misplaced within my system.
I’d guess that you did a recursive import and those were somewhere in the tree.
I don’t think anyone but you is going to give a definitive answer about why some files were imported into your database.
