I am happily running dt 4.6.1 without OpenCL on Ubuntu 23.10 using Xorg and I am being asked if I want to upgrade to 24.04. DT is pretty much the only demanding application I run on it and I really enjoy using it.
Based on this thread and having read elsewhere about August and the simple fact that things work at the moment I think I will tell it to Ask Me Later a few more times.
I update from Ubuntu 23.x to 24.x . The first time my DT 4.6.1 seems to have had lot issues.
I than wiped the system clean and re-installed everything and seems to be more stable.
I think I had issues the first time is because it had lots previous Ubuntu upgrades before and it may have left a lot of rubbish behind
Back at this topic - because now by end of August and Ubuntu 24.04.1 seeming stable enough I started inplace upgrade from 23.10 to 24.04 - complete fail!
After startup I got a white screen reporting an undefined problem and I never reached the login. I tried to repair it from console but no way. So i decided to completely re-install the machine from iso with Ubuntu 24.04 which worked at first sight.
Trying to get OpenCL active I installed severeal packages which left me with an Ubuntu installation that did not start applications anymore. Ubuntu GUI showed up, mousepointer was movable everything looked got, but a click on any application icon did nothing.
Does anyone have a similar machine with OpenCL activated on Ubuntu 24.04??
Still working with 22.04, having 24.04 on a second (testing) hardware without OpenCL for testing purposes.
In the past, I was never satisfied with the direct upgrade from the previous system, there were always (more or less) hidden problems. For some time now, I’ve only been installing fresh from the iso and have set up a dual boot system with two hard disks. This way I always have the “old” running system available as a backup.
I have an Nvidia RTX 2060 in my hardware for daily work, when using the proprietary drivers from Nvidia, there have been no problems so far, unfortunately no experience with AMD.
