Before upgrading from Ubuntu 23.10 to 24.04 LTS - did anyone of you already do the upgrade?
Does darktable master (4.7.x) run fine?
It builds, starts and works fine. Far from all the features being tested though.

EDIT: Iām running master in a 24.04 VM without any problems, though I havenāt done any serious processing.
Just built master from a few minutes ago and it still runs fine.

Thank you very much for the feedback, then Iāll do the upgrade soon!
I still havenāt been prompted to upgrade by 23.10, even though I selected āany new releaseā (not just LTS) as the notification criterion.
Hi IstvƔn,
this prompt usually comes about a month after the first release of the new version, when the first few bugs are corrected
But there are already hints on the net how to manually start the upgrade.
I will do it today on my second computer and then post the results here
btw the following commands start the update:
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y
sudo apt install update-manager-core
sudo do-release-upgrade -d
Iāve read about some snap-related issue. I have completely removed snap from my machine, donāt know if Iād be affected.
I may leave Ubuntu after about a decade with that distro. Iāll have to find another, without snap, that uses Xorg, is stable yet up to date.
my update already runs, letās see ā¦
As this is my older PC it should be no problem even if the update fails. It is a good idea to reinstall from iso every now and then anyway.
Iām on Ubuntu since Warty Warthog and sometimes it is good to wait 2-3 months before upgrading, yes. But nowadays the only use for a PC for me is darktable all the rest I do with mobile devices so what. Beside Ubuntu I use dt on Windows in the company (thanks to @wpferguson (big thanks to Bill) and at home never went back from Ubuntu.
I had read that article too, but all the packages I installed were debs. I used the command line and apt.
darktable can be build from git master without problems on Ubuntu 24.04 (Lubuntu) following the directions from the Wiki. Some simple edits show the application running smoothly (tested without OpenCL).
but :
- optional package openexr-dev (as requested by the Wiki) does not exist. Correct name is libopenexr-dev.
- upgrade from previous Ubuntu release is not recommended as already has been mentioned
- installation as dual boot (beside 22.04) from iso image with some serious glitches. After definition and confirmation of installation parameters (language, time zone, names, password, destination disk, ā¦) installation started showing a black screen with visible and movable cursor. About 35 min later (continued black screen, no feedback on the success or failure of the installation) no more activity of CD-ROM and harddisk noticable ā eject CD-ROM ā hardware reset. Subsequent boot from hard disk successful.
- Login screen (sddm) not correct, text not readable (āpixelatedā, as if wrong sreen resolution is used ?).
- some applications with serious glitches causing small malfunctions up to hard crashes forcing a hardware reset.
All the issues described were not observed on identical hardware under lubuntu 22.04.
Recommendation : You should have very strong nerves if you want to use Ubuntu 24.04 in its current state. An installation as a daily working system does not seem to be recommended yet, the system (including installer) is not yet reliable enough. Better wait for the official release in august. Installation as a (parallel) test system seems justifiable, but one should not be surprised about occasional issues.
Thanks for the detailed report. Iāve installed 24.04 in VirtualBox, but did not force an upgrade of my actual machine, running 23.10. However, that will be sunsetted in July. I hope 24.04 will have stabilised by that time.
Thank you all for the detailed comments. Sorry for not reporting any earlier. The in-place upgrade of Ubuntu 23.10 to 24.04 on my PC left me with an installation without network connection, due to a lost proprietary driver for my USB wifi antenna. Today I carried my computer to the next room to be able to connect it with a cable to LAN. Installed the wifi driver againt and voĆla ā¦ so far everything seems to work.
So my experience was an almost positive one. I pulled latest darktable master, build and installed it without a problem. Had some issues with one snap installed software but after uninstall and re-install it worked as well.
ā¦ but after some more testing I can say ā¦ wait with the update, this release of Ubuntu is not mature! The GUI has a couple of pesky bugs, sometimes elements are not visible which makes the new release hardly usable. For example the files application doesnāt show the files unless you hover the mouse over them and sometimes they vanish as soon as you move the mouse away from them.
what about with open CL?
Due to very bad experiences, I never carry out a release upgrade on my fully featured working system first. I have older hardware for testing purposes on which I have installed 24.04 in parallel to 22.04 (dual boot). Although this system has an Nvidia graphics card, this is unfortunately no longer supported by the proprietary drivers available under 24.04. No OpenCL ā test not possible.
Iām not using the darktable (master) iām using the flatpak version 4.6.1 (although i also tried the deb version and snap version with same symptoms) but have trouble with the windowing on the app - the settings and interface is not clickable. Then i logged out and logged into ubuntu without wayland then back into wayland and it worked just fine . (previously i had 23.10 and open CL +everything worked fine). now whenever i boot up i have to log out and into a different seesion e.g. gnome+wayland or gnome without or ubuntu without then BACK into ubuntu + wayland to get darktable to work

Wayland is not really supported by dt. There are already numerous discussions on this topic in this forum (use search functionality). And as already mentioned several times in this thread, 24.04 does not seem to be stable enough for daily use yet. Personally, Iām waiting for the official release of 24.04.1 (august) to do more testing.
Wayland may not be really suported by dt but it was working perfectly on 23.10 with dt and open CL enabled for me before. since updating to 23.04 LTS it is not working properly.
i was too rash in updating but my own fault and not so terrible as windows 11 is my production arena (for graphic design) and not linux.
But as linux is my recreational area it is now spoilt as it is as dt is my focus area for my own play as a hobbyist photographer.
what i should have done was used the search function before updating.
I am running Ubuntu 24.04 with Xorg installed (that happened automatically), with opencl enabled on a Nvidia 4070 Super.
