viewing a dicom file gets "transfer syntax is not supported" error

background: my doctor’s office gave me a CD with a bunch of files (of xrays). They only have a file name, but no filetype.
The CD contains a ‘OpalViewerLite.exe’ file and when I start it, it is able to open the xray files correctly.

I copied the files from CD to my local disk. When I try to open a file with GIMP, it gets the following error message:

Opening ‘D:\mydir\001\i0010001’ failed:
Transfer syntax 1.2.840.1008.1.2.4.90 is not supported by GIMP.

I opened the file with notepad and saw it was a DICM file. I then renamed them to have a .dicm filetype. GIMP does not like this file name either (same message).

How to get GIMP to open these files?

I am using GIMP 3.0.4

Probably better to use a dedicated dicom viewer, like Horos.

How about using ImageJ -fiji?

I suppose DICM files may be read with bio-format plug-in in ImageJ. And you may be able to save them in GIMP readable file format.

Hi! GIMP’s DICOM plug-in doesn’t yet support all versions of DICOM. We had someone submit a WIP merge request to improve support: Updating file-dicom to gdcm library (!1135) · Merge requests · GNOME / GIMP · GitLab

But it’s a while so I’m not sure when they’ll finish it.

It turns out that the provided viewer, ‘OpalViewerLite.exe’, has a “save image as” function. It let me save the DICOM image as a jpeg.

I needed a jpeg to be able to email to my doctor (their email only allows PDF and JPG).
