A beautifil scene, but a bit unsharp.
I could not do anything good with the blown sky …

Hello,

It’s hard to do better in colour, so here is my black and white version.
Darktable 4.1

@Sunhillow

An idea for the blown sky:

  1. lower value of HighLights to 20 in module Shadows/HighLights.
  2. Raise HighLights compression value to 250 in Exposure module.
  3. Add parametric Tone Curve 2 in Exposure module and set HighLight value to -80.

Better?
Greetings!

A bit. Thanks!
I turned off several modules including RGB curves, reduced Shadows/Highlights and added a LUT called “Canon Footage”. I don’t remember where it is from, probably from this forum. Looks pretty good to my eyes.

Edit: the LUT is from there:

A simple edit. White balance set to daylight to bring out the greens, exposure slightly dark to give deep tones, filmic auto levels and some local contrast, denoise profile and basic colorfulness preset. Plus straightening of the vertical tree.

This is a wonderful scene @dqpcoxeas , I love it. Also I like your edit the best by far - it really conveys tranquility. Nevertheless I made an attempt myself, and it ended with a similar look, yet a bit warmer (but less well-chosen colors).

GIMP. Local adjustments to contrast and brightness using luminosity masks.

I did not see the original, but to me a more calming, tranquil, breath-in-the-nature look is one with less contrast. Also added some grainy texture.

I think @saliniero 's approach is very nice.

Increasing the contrasts of the softly lit grass gives the scene a nice spatial depth.

I mostly changed the geometry and L*a*b* color curve adjustments, to broaden the greens into yellows and blues.

This is a really dreamy image and I tried to accentuate that attribute.

ART 1.19.3

20210704_0047.CR2.arp (33.0 KB)

  • Blend mode highlight reconstruction
  • -1 stop exposure
  • Bumped L*a*b* chromaticity
  • Reduced highlights in Tone Equalizer to help tame the sky a bit
  • 2/3 stop vignette
  • Straighten and slight crop

Local (masked) edits

  • Color/Tone correction - Gradient over the sky, brightened up the mid-ground grass, raised contrast on the water to bring out reflections (but with a gradient to fade them in the distance and another in the lower foreground to darken the sky reflection), slightly brightened the right-hand tree trunk
  • Local Contrast - slight small detail enhancement on the right-hand tree trunk
  • Texture Boost - Since ART doesn’t have masking for sharpening, I used TB with a feathered brush mask to accentuate just the middle distance in order to help pull the eye to it (basically like a little masked sharpening).

I really like this shot and it was fun to try and build on its inherent strengths. It reminds me of Tolkien.
