do you think I should re-install Gimp via the 2.8 PPA in the hope this will then enable your appimage to run?

This should not matter, because the libraries are loaded from the appimage bundle… do you have any plugin installed in your $HOME/.config/GIMP folder?

No, I don’t even have that folder. (I have folder $Home/.config/GIMP-AppImage)
