What are you listening to?

Sacred and Profane, Bernstein’s “Chichester Psalms” and Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana”

Visited my brother over the Thanksgiving weekend and during my visit, we went to the GoodWill where he lives. While perusing things, ran across Pat Metheny Secret Story for 99¢ so opened the case and the CD was if fantastic condition so bought it; big fan of Pat Metheny’s music since it’s between smooth jazz and New Age and both genres I do enjoy. Listened to the complete CD on my 90 mile trip back home with 2 minutes extra so waited until the CD ended before getting out of my car. Just surprised my CD player still works; it’s been 10 years (yes; my car’s now old; lol) since I last used it (splurge on SIruisXM so had no need; lol).

Some compositions I liked; others not so much. Below’s one that I really did like. Still can’t believe I got this CD for 99¢; I use to purchase music a lot but it’s been over 2 decades since I have because playing music online’s definitely the norm, now. lol

 (and yes; re-edited to fix some typos and grammer issues; might have still missed a few things; lol)

Laibach:

Is that Mike Patton on the mic ? Sounds like him.

I am currently playing Hades II and boy, that soundtrack kicks ass once again. Especially when entering Tartarus and the battle music when you are all out of bubble gum. Just terrific! The Soundtrack to Hades I is great, too.

And also great gentle TV written by Mackenzie Crook.

He has great taste in music. The theme song for his first excellent telly programme, The Detectorists, was also beautiful and calming.

And more Johnny with Laura Marling, sitting in a garden

Just been listening to the latest album from Cardiacs - LSD. Quirky and fun with very complex songwriting. I really like it.

Oh, interesting looking. Will have a listen

So many roads by my favourite band, Grateful Dead …

There is a significant number of things happening with regard to Mary, Queen of Scots at the moment, due to the exhibition of her last letter in various places in Scotland.

I have been listening to Mary’s Music, a set of songs and dances from the time.

As a follow-up to this, I have also been listening to Ewan McColl’s Songs of Two Rebellions, which deals with the Jacobite rebellions of 1715 and 1745.

Been watching Twin Peaks again lately, so…

It’s not going to be everyone’s cup of tea… But if you’re an astrophotography, or like dance music, or like subtle photography puns… This is for you

Currently listening to Skyrim but it’s Jazz.

I can’t remember if I said this earlier or not, but I’ve been (re)ripping my CD collection and have been reminded of what I knew, but didn’t think of: CDs don’t last forever. Especially if they were burnt on a consumer drive. I have several CDs that I got directly from an artist in the early 2000s and those are now, very sadly, blank.

Now is the 2nd best time to digitize those. The 1st best time was like 2011.

What software are you using? When I first started ripping my thousands of CDs to FLAC (well over a decade ago), I started with Media Monkey. It worked OK for pre-recorded CDs, but CDs I made myself (e.g., digitized from LPs) were a disaster. I switched to Foobar 2000 and could not be happier. For ripping and playback, Foobar 2000 is a superb piece of (Free) software–highly intuitive and easy to figure out. Nevertheless, of course ripping with any software is very time consuming, and can be tedious as well, especially when you have to fill in track names by hand.

Sad to say, LP collecting has been suspended for years now, and I have not bought a CD in a couple of years since we signed up with Qobuz. Well worth the money, very deep catalog, and excellent sound quality. Still, I will not part with my physical media or FLAC files.
