What is the purpose of Jasper?

When Compiling from GIT 3.7.0+1511~gdf356c0c1 - I see the following:
Could NOT find Jasper (missing: JASPER_LIBRARIES JASPER_INCLUDE_DIR)

I think this is a recent addition to dt build options.
Would someone tell me what it does?

Software-based implementation of the codec specified in the emerging JPEG-2000 Part 1-standard.

Have fun!

Many thanks Claes.

Although as far as I can see libjasper-dev is not currently available Ubuntu 20.04 / Mint 20.2.

There is a package called ‘Jasper’ but I don’t think is related to JPEG-2000.
Jasper - Configure a preinstalled ext2/3 system image

As darktable compiles without jasper I’ll leave it for now.

AFAIK the JPEG2000 codec is only used for some RED camera raw files, very niche, so you probably don’t need it…
