What to buy before the tariffs kick in?

A Steam Deck, and any Apple Gear you need. If you need those, there’s no alternative.

I do like my Surface tablet and Google phone, too, but they have trivial Asian and European replacements if necessary. And Steam Deck alternatives might be coming out soon enough.

We are in for a rough ride, but if there’s light at the end of the tunnel, it’s a more self-sufficient Canada that does more trade with like-minded countries. There are lots of US companies I like and admire, but I’m definitely looking at Canadian alternatives for everything now.

It’s not just Europeans! Even the penguins in Antarctica are assessing their alternatives now

Yeah, I think the Penguins from Heard Island will definitely struggle the most.

To be honest, even so we Europeans will have some pain, I fear this idiocy will have a much worse impact on poorer countries and the people there, which are already struggling.

In the end it will go the same way like it went in the last years. Poor people will become poorer while the rich ones will get richer. Not a good scenario if you are a fan of peace and fairness. This counts as well for the inhabitants of the US.

For me it means I will avoid products from the US as good as I can unless the companies are not willing to stand up against such politics. This is not very difficult for me, there are not that many products from the US which I’m really into.

Apple, which I always hated because of the walled garden politics, won some respect on my side, for still making their own thing and respecting the individuality of people . Anyway this doesn’t make their products more sexy for me…

So my only problem is, that I wanted to build a new workstation this year including an AMD Ryzen 9950X3d and a Radeon RX 9070 XT. Unfortunately I haven’t read or heard that AMD took a position.

A new camera is as well on my list, but luckily most camera manufacturers are from Japan.

By the way, I’m not only trying to avoid products from the US but as well from any country which isn’t in favour of democracy - which I have to admit is much harder. Anyway I have the luck, that I’m at least in a position that allows me to try it.

  1. We are pretty good at hard liquor on this side of the pond
  2. My Levi’s are made in Pakistan and Vietnam. And the latest crop is crap, I’ll be brand-switching anyway.
  3. Made in Taiwan
  4. Made in Taiwan
  5. The only apple products I know are cider and Calvados
  6. US cars (they don’t fit in most parking lots) / Tesla (a bit out of fashion these days)

So, the only US things I use are Google and Amazon. And Pixls.us. Hard to get rid of these three though.

We are hosted in Europe and @darix is European and he does most of the labor. So I call us European.

Google:

  • there are other mail providers (protonmail/ctemplar/tuta come to mind)
  • there are other providers to upload files to from your phone (nextcloud/opencloud based, protonmail has files and docs included as well e.g.)
  • there are other map providers (openstreetmap)
  • there are other search providers (we just had a thread about that, personally I do Qwant + kagi)

Amazon:

  • stop ordering from them. it isnt hard hard. I started doing that because how annoying it is to order electronics from them.
  • prime video/music, kindle got alternatives

please let me know why you cant do without them?

also e.g. Adobe just pulled the plug on Venezuela for all their products.

what would you do if Amazon and Google did the same for your country?

on mastodon there is a hashtag #UnplugTrump where people discuss a lot of self hosting topics.

  • Google: it’s mostly Android. I have my mail elsewhere and I use DDG
  • Tougher one: I do get my photo gear from specialized outlets, but for many things they are the only practical source.

When thinking about cancelling Prime, I was worried where else I could get all the cheap crap I usually order because we don’t have anything like an Amazon alternative in Canada. But I went ahead and cancelled anyway, despite my fears…

A couple of months later and I came to the obvious realization that I just didn’t need the cheap crap at all. So the decision has actually been great for my wallet, and I get to walk around sporting a wonderfully bright halo of virtuousness, which I’m sure Bezos can see from his one of his Blue Orifice spaceships and makes him feel excruciatingly guilty.

Ditto.

I wish I could agree. But YouTube, Android, and certain uses of Google Maps (businesses, reviews, public transport info) don’t have good replacements that I know of. To say nothing of Google’s search deals, which keep Mozilla afloat.

Mapy.cz, Zen browser, Firefox, Kiwi browser, FairEmail, and Mailbox otherwise replace most other Google services for me. (Also, indirectly, Feedbin, Raindrop, and Obsidian, all of which are delightful products).

Amazon is much easier, where it’s only a very small number of very specific products that are only available there. And their reviews are genuinely useful as well. But the vast majority of purchases are actually easier to do on other online stores. Geizhals in particular makes finding products and sellers much easier than it ever was on Amazon. And I far prefer my Kobo over anything Kindle.

The other big guy is Microsoft. I truly do like my Surface tablet, which runs Windows. And the company I work for is a Windows shop, so I spend most of my days in Windows, Microsoft Teams, Visual Studio, and Visual Studio Code. The latter has indeed replaced Emacs for me, which makes me sad. Oddly though, my gaming now mostly happens on the Steam Deck, i.e. linux. And NVidia or Microsoft cloud streaming when I need a bigger screen.

(It recently occurred to me that I run Linux to play games, use Windows to program, and run my FOSS software on MacOS. What the frick is wrong with me!?)

I don’t really use YouTube often. But if, I use it via FreeTube. So no ads for me and no profit for Google. I use Sailfish OS on my mobile, so no Google on this side as well. I usually use OSM for Maps. If I need traffic info, I use Here Maps. But that’s very seldom. In car I rely on TMC on my satnav.

The search deal with Mozilla is a different story. I think at the moment, there is no way around. I would happily pay for firefox, even so it isn’t my main browser on the desktop. But I fear there are too less people, which are willing to do that.

I as well have a surface tablet, running siduction. But to be honest, I still prefer my convertible by far, which is running as well siduction. It’s an HP. But I’ve already decided, that my next laptop will be a Tuxedo.

As you can see I exclusively use Linux as OS, so I don’t need any MS services or programs.

For online shopping, there are more than enough European alternatives. Which nowadays are often faster, cheaper and offer a better service than amazon and ebay.

So what are my hardest points?
I sometimes use PayPal, still trying to avoid it whenever I can, and I hope there will be soon a proper European alternative.

Anyway I haven’t found a way to avoid using my credit card.
And there are only American credit card providers and no alternatives on the horizon.

For convertible, framework just released their 12 inch, which is a 2 in 1 sort of deal. AFIK they ship from asia so no tariffs there. IMO buying american is worth it when it comes to companies that actively support FOSS or right to repair. At the end of the day tuxedos are just rebranded laptops so you might as well just buy from the source (taiwan).

If it comes to FOSS companies and companies which make clear that they are standing for democracy and sustainability I don’t care where they are coming from.

Thanx for pointing to framework, I will keep an eye on it. On the German website there is not much information about the 12 inch 2in1 yet.

That Tuxedo is just rebranding in the end is probably true, and there is nothing wrong with buying a laptop from a Taiwanese company. Anyway I want to support companies which are supporting FOSS.

I am not going to stock up on anything, for the following reasons.

First, I am really hoping that this whole madness will be temporary. I expect that tariffs will raise inflation in the US significantly, affecting voters, generating a lot of dissatisfaction and Congress will step in. Then things can get back to normal.

But if that does not happen, there will be a recession so I will prefer to have savings instead of whatever durable or nondurable goods I would get from the US.

I find it surprising how the sentiment in this topic turned into a boycott, instead of a simple (potentially) rational consumer response. I still think of the US as an ally of the EU and I have no desire to punish people or companies just because they happen to be in the US, they will have enough on trouble without me contributing.

Do you really think that the current US government still sees Europe as their ally? They are openly talking about annexing parts of what belongs to an European country.

I wonder if there is an opportunity to donate to pixls to cover infrastructure cost in europe directly, such that the money does not have to go around the globe and through several service providers, each getting a little share of the donation. I have only seen paypal and amazon on the donations page …

Maybe @darix has an IBAN to share?
