Please advise if there is anything we poor Europeans need to buy before the counter-tariffs kick-in. My personal list of highly (not ) missed items will be (in loose order):
- Jack Daniels
- Jeans
- GPUs
- CPUs
- Apple Products
- US cars / Teslas
Please advise if there is anything we poor Europeans need to buy before the counter-tariffs kick-in. My personal list of highly (not ) missed items will be (in loose order):
There are a few items I was interested in from the US. I was looking at purchasing a US made jazzmaster this year but with these tarrifs they are out of the question… Maybe I’ll get something from Valiant Guitars.
Theoretically PC parts shouldn’t be hit for us, but we all know how that’s gonna go. We will end up sharing part of the load The orange man needs to be stopped
Edit: I just remembered most guitar strings are made in the US as well… better stock up
keep in mind that cpu’s etc are made in taiwan or china, and most likely reach other markets without going to the USA first, so no tariffs, if they don’t do this now, they will be shortly
I thought that anything that relates to AMD or Nvidia will sooner or later be on the list. Somehow I read that semi-conductor items are exempt. Everything is much too complicated in this regard and feels like we are put 30 years back in time.
Definitely not Teslas, I’m afraid …
there are already tariffs on semi’s, was 25% now 50% (since jan 1st iirc), but these only apply within the USA, stuff that’s exported is tariff-free.
I don’t think items that are manufactured outside the USA and exported to other countries can be tariffed, I’m sure most larger companies have foreign subsidaries which would handle foreign orders, all companies would have to do this if one did
As a Canadian, I am more concerned about the shared logistics, infrastructure and even families. It will be more than percentage increases due to the integration of our economies and lives.
I am going the other way, looking for US goods to avoid, and British/European replacements.
Given where I live, I won’t be thinking about buying Jack Daniels. This will be my next bottle of whisky
There are European replacements for a number of American digital services that I am currently exploring.
Your next bottle is blocked in my browser!
I feel the same as you. My biggest topic for the next month is to switch my web hosting provider which was bought by an American company some time ago and is now porting all email services to MS 365 - basically a no-go for my taste. For many things there are good alternatives but for some stuff the options are limited.
I can’t blame anyone for avoiding US products because of this foolishness, but in case you do want to stock up on US whiskeys then I’d recommend Makers Mark, Wild Turkey 101, the single barrel options from Four Roses, and anything from Buffalo Trace. Evan Williams frequently punches above it’s weight in quality vs price with the Single Barrel Vintage being a particularly good value.
Sadly, the single malt scotch is already pricey here in the States and its going to go through the roof and I’m lucky to have just bought a new car. We share your pain.
Dave G. from Virginia, USA
This looks excellent. My favorite whiskys are from Islay (Lagavulin, Ardbeg, …), I have to taste this one …
We just started getting Jefferson’s Bourbon here in Ontario. I have one bottle to last me until the trade war ends. Although the way things are going, the quality of Canadian Whisky may catch up to Kentucky Bourbon before that happens
Interesting! I’ve been using DigitalOcean (their Toronto locaiton) from my static website and nextcloud server. hetzner.com, the first one on your list I looked at, offers more storage for cheaper, maybe worth switching
Try their website, rather than just an image.
Jefferson’s is quite good. You might also want to look for Bowman Brothers if you’re in the market. It’s owned by the same company as Buffalo Trace, but it’s distilled, casked and bottled in Virginia
China has just put reciprocal tariffs in place. It will also be restricting the sale of rare earth metals.
Given this, and the technologies that are made in China, it looks as though that is going to affect just about everything on your list.
(Aside, last time I heard, over 50% of the world’s sewing machines are located in China, so even jeans may be a problem
)
I am British. Should I return two items that came from the USA? The lens in my left eye is Californian. The other lens is Texan.
PS. The best whisky in the world is Premium Scotch Whisky from Islay, Scotland | Laphroaig
As someone who worked for a company with very high exposure to import tarrifs here is a friendly reminder: Tariffs amounts are based on the wholesale price. If the retail price change exceeds, meets, or (many times) is even close to the tarrif change, you are being milked.
This is not a defence of policy. Just a reminder to keep ones eyes focused.
I’m in the US. I bought a new router on April 1. I assume it is made in China.
Try a Godin - it’s a Canadian Guitar (https://godinguitars.com/).
I owe an old G4000 and I’m still happy with it.
