Useful!
I’ve thought about it, but it’s getting enough people interested that’s the hard bit.
Yep…
I run a sidegig sport photography business. I was using Smugmug for 4 years, but I decided to host my own images with Wordpress and Imagely and it really has brought down my cost. It limits what I can sell a little bit, but the overhead is virtually nothing compared to 50 bucks a month plus 15% of sales of smugmug.
Ouch!
Hey Mica, where in the fediverse are you?
Have you looked at Pixelfed for photo sharing @betazoid is there and posts a bit.
I’m a bit mixed with the fediverse side of things having separate mastodon and pixelfed accounts trying to keep the two interests they serve separate, and I think as a result leads to poor utilisating of it on my behalf… since most of my use is via the phone and the WebUIs for both seem to be much better.
Damn you can rent a whole server from OVH for that much.
@paperdigits@mastodon.art
I have looked at pixelfed, but haven’t joined. I wanted to run it myself but it was too convoluted last I checked. I’d like to have a pixls.us instance but we haven’t agreed on anything yet.
I’ve never used Instagram, so…
I’ve only posted a few to mastodon.art, but people have been kind.
After I stopped using deviantart.com, I never really found another place that resonated with me as much as deviant art.
Cool… let’s see how it goes with the follow from my mastodon account. I couldn’t find your account from pixelfed, so I guess it’s not federated there.
I have to say, I’m still trying to figure out the fediverse “thing”. I ended up on a more info sec based instance, but don’t feel it’s the right fit for posting images and social matters… the problem is whether or not to move and if that might increase or actually start some posting in the mastodon sphere…
@plaven I got your follow from the info sec and found your pixelfed account and followed that as well.
You should find an instance where you feel comfortable posting what you want. That is important.
Mastodon.art is invite only, so you can request an account. But pixelfed.social should also be fine. The pixelfed mobile apps seem to be coming along quickly. I am using Tusky, an android mastodon client, and I mostly like it. Other than that I use the web interface.
Pixelfed.social stopped registrations today as it’s growing too big I guess. But there are many other instances
Agreed. I’ve created an account on a regional .social site and will see if that makes a difference. Same arrangement here with the mobile app. It’s definitely a richer experience on the web app though, but these days I find myself not using the desktop computer that much. One of the reasons that photography and editing has dropped off. I do more with phone and editing with Snapseed. For what it’s worth, it’s all passable in terms of images captured and finished outcome for social posting.
I’ve been on Pixelfed.social for some time, just not actively posting there.
I do wonder how well the notion of free hosting and services that many are used to will work in the fediverse. Someone has to cover the costs for time, effort and financial. Hosting/storing all that data isn’t cheap.
I’m still thinking about hosting both a mastodon and pixelfed instance because the system admin in me likes to spend time doing that sort of thing…
I don’t think there is a notion that it is free. Each instance has an admin and, at least on mastodon.art, the admin actively asks for donations to cover costs and is transparent about what the costs are for hosting and storage.
I’ve been thinking of starting my own social media site for photography with no fucking videos, vertical or horizontal lol but I have an hybrid usage idea. Probably going to build it using BackdropCMS which is a Drupal 7 fork.

Really good photos, thanks for sharing! Especially these from the industrial side.
Thanks
