why do we need to add a license to play raw images

Hi,
I’ll ask again since apparently the other thread was deleted… If I read them xorrectly, the terms of service state that all contributions are licensed with creative commons by default. Why is this not enough? What am I missing?

Maybe start a thread around that topic. I’m not an admin.

I think the TOS refer to the text you type into a post but not an image. When you post to Play Raw it has the prepopulated license text but for some reason posters just delete it.

We ask this so that the poster of the image is 100% clear on what is happening with their image.

I am happy that you’ve read the ToS, but most have not.

Ok, fair enough. I just wish people would keep this in mind instead of welcoming new posters (and not only them) with passive aggressive messages about a missing license. This happens way too often for my taste – but maybe it’s just my taste.

well what wording would you suggest instead of “Please add a license”?

Would it be possible to implement something like Reddit’s AutoMod, that posts a friendly reminder if no license attribution has been detected?

Probably technically possible, but seems like more trouble than its worth, since there is sometimes some back and forth. Other here are good about asking people to add a license.

When you open a playraw thread it already tells you that. I guess most people ignore it, or they chose the “processing” topic with play-raw as a tag and it doesn’t show up

I used to write a nice welcome with licensing information/recommendations. After a while it became tedious, so I referred to it or copied it over. If we had an automated banner for new contributors, that would be fantastic.

@hatsnp I forgot about that.

Yeah, too many people tag play_raw ! ! ! They seem to be pigeonholing participants in one direction, e.g., categorizing under dt to get only dt play raws.

They should be banned for that. :joy_cat:

There is the “Topic required words” automation. If it can be made to require the word “Licence” when in the Play Raw category or if the post is tagged play_raw, that could be an option.

that wouldnt solve problems like people starting a post in processing and just add a tag #playraw and we move it later to the playraw category.

so the automation we probably need most is a “hey you tagged this as playraw. you probably want the playraw category instead”

Another option is why not just let it be? In the end if they didn’t read the ToS, that is their problem, and also by reading other play raws they will eventually see that almost everyone uses an explicit license.

Well we enabled the discourse automation plugin, so we’ll see how that goes once it is configured.

For what it’s worth, I think it’s a good idea to prompt people to explicitly choose a license. Explicit is better than implicit. And it explicitly applies that license not just to the pixls.us forum, but to each user as well.
