One thing I’m going to try is see if I can record the sap rising in trees
@Brian_Innes Sounds interesting. Have you recorded anything yet? Be sure to share some of it.
On my end, I had another adventure. This time not as elaborate as the snow day’s. Today, I ended up sitting in a dinosaur egg with children talking to me and knocking on the shell, just because my internet stopped working at home. Fun times.
I also did a job interview inside the egg because that was the least noisy place in the local mall. - PS cockatiel and budgie chirping as well - what a day!
I did attach the contact mic to an angle poise desk lamp (IKEA’s finest), and gave the lamp and springs a good twanging. Not got around to opening the recording in Audacity yet though.
Although here is a test recording using the contact mic held against a Singing Bowl, and running the bowl hammer around the rim. Piezo Contact Mic Singing Bowl - YouTube Pretty interesting!
On the job front, that is a different story.
I’m now getting an appointment with my works “Occupational Health” Provider, to a) assess my fitness for work and b) probably recommend that I get medically retired from work due to my position at work (which I was doing on health grounds) being made redundant.
^ The fidelity is good.
What trees are you planning to record?
I’m not sure where to post this but it seems relevant here, I found this cursed thing on Facebook Marketplace. Seems like it falls under “other detours.”
Anyway, I might be lighter $1,000 in a little while.
I’m willing to donate $20 to help you get that @lhutton
Please put it in your front yard.
Fits right in. Selling cursed items on f* cursed F* sounds about right.
Waiting for the #showcase or #processing:playraw entry.
We’ve got those auto off lights in the bathroom at work (don’t take too long in there) so I was thinking more about sticking it right by the entrance.
Putting it at work is a total waste, just put a piece of tape over the sensor.
I got a job offer! — Working through the details. If all goes well, in three weeks, it will be my first job with proper compensation. Still contract work, but less anxiety means more time to spend with you all.
Congrats Alan!
You mean you are going to be an International Man of Mystery? Groovy Baby!
Me? Well I’m now in the process of getting medically retired at work.
I am starting on April 17. Goodbye Tech Infrastructure; hello Admin and Finance. Less everything everywhere all at once; more sedentary work…?
In the meantime, I started a CNC (CAD, CAM) course provided by one of our members, the Toronto Tool Library, at our Spadina location, so I will still be around the at Centre for Social Innovation after the transition. Should be fun — except for the one-way two-hour commute.
Driving or public transit?
Public transit to my workplace and the CNC course takes two hours, or more, if disrupted or stopped by weather, construction, disrepair, violence or silliness.
My new workplace will be one to two blocks farther, extending the trip to approximately two hours and fifteen minutes. This may increase with time, as downtown Toronto is increasingly under more construction, development, disruption and congestion, and the Toronto Transit Commission is receiving more service and route cuts.
I already have to walk two extra blocks to catch the streetcar in addition to connecting to multiple bus and subway routes to get where I need to be. Nevertheless, I would rather ride the rocket than drive downtown and find parking, which to me is a nightmare. At least I get to sleep (with one eye open, lest someone, or a group, tries to harm me).
That was really negative but true. It might also be my seasonal(?) virus talking.
Another truth is that I have a new job!
that pays me a living wage.
Thank you, Klaus Teuber, for all the good, oft competitive, times: Catan board game creator Klaus Teuber dies at 70 | CTV News.
I may need to purchase a shop vac like yours. The garage has too much grit and junk from the road, gardening and construction materials to sweep.
I completed the 6-session CNC course. It was an introduction, so I am by no means qualified for anything. However, I have learned things I would not have otherwise from reading a book. With the course, I also get 3 hours on the big machine. Monthly membership is too much for me to buy in, being as my old workplace is a 2+ hours one-way commute from my home.
The other day I was thinking, “What should I make?” and two ideas popped up: a fancy Scrabble board (old cheap one is falling apart) and Kub Kar (kids broke my childhood one).
Not super advanced or creative: Someone took the course and made a guitar from scratch! Maybe I will come up with other ideas at a later date.
Another detour for me!
My sister gave me her old “Pitchmaster PM54KSB” musical keyboard she bought a few years ago, for £40 new from Amazon, including stand!
Pretty basic, and pretty cheesy tones, but I think I may end eventually upgrade to a nice Yamaha keyboard soon. Interestingly, my specialist physio did recommend I teach myself to play an instrument of someform, to help improve the dexterity of my hands caused by a neurological condition.
Guess the badly played tune!
