And Mastodon is unfortunately beyond non-techy folks’ patience.

Pixelfed is a non-corporate alternative to Creepy Zuckerberg’s Insta that’s rapidly getting popular.
And Mastodon is no more difficult for the non-techy than darktable.

Darktable isn’t a social network
@TonyBarrett I clearly don’t think darktable is a social network. It’s software with a user interface, just as Mastodon is. And what do we say to people who complain that darktable is too difficult for non-techy people to use???
@paperdigits Bizarre, isn’t it? Presumably people are less creeped-out by ex-Twitter guy Jack Dorsey than they are by Super-Creepy Zuckerberg?
Dorsey left Bluesky because he reckoned it was repeating all the mistakes Twitter made, and because he didn’t like Bluesky Social’s company structure and the moderation tools it added to the AT Protocol.
Bluesky Social is looking for ways to ‘monetise’ the platform without using advertising. Some form of subscription or user payments looks possible.

Thing is though, I can make the effort myself to learn Darktable as I think it’s worthwhile. Whether people I know or whose thoughts I have an interest in reading want to make that effort has little bearing on its utility.
That can’t be said for a social media platform. So unless I can figure out a way to persuade all the social and natural scientists and other academics and commentators that I follow on Bluesky to simultaneously make the jump to Mastodon, it’s a no go. It took Elon Musk’s latest antics and his troll army to even get enough people to switch to make Bluesky viable for that purpose.
Many of those people, including myself, did try to switch to Mastodon a year back but it didn’t stick because it was off putting enough that momentum wasn’t there for our needs.

@TonyBarrett Yes, the new ‘federated’ platforms do seem each to attract different communities. (I get the impression - totally subjective - that Mastodon, for example, seems to attract tech and infosec people, lawyers, journos, media tech folk. Mmm… maybe you’re right!)
Maybe I need to have a look again. The last time I looked, there wasn’t even a smooth running iOS app.
Several apps on the App Store now, both free and paid. The official ‘Mastadon’ one is free. A tech pro of my acquiantance swears by ‘Ivory for Mastadon’ by Tapbots (£1.99/month or £14.99 annual)
For Pixelfed (the Instagram replacement) I use the Pixelfed App by Daniel Supernault, the dev who created Pixelfed. It’s free.

Thanks. I tried to log in to mastodon again today and failed. It just doesn’t play well with my password manager and I have multiple accounts for reasons I can’t remember. I’d tried Pixelfed in an early iteration and it was not fun times. I’ll give them a go again this week. But no one I followed on Twitter and now follow on Bluesky is likely to be on there so motivation is low
Well, you could just post a few of your photographs on Pixelfed just for fun — and they’ll show the folk there what wonders are possible with darktable!

Well just tried this minute to log into pixelfed. First via app. After entering saved details just bounces me back to the pick a server screen. Tried in browser, wants me to request to join a server I already joined. Sorry but giving up
Pixelfed.social is under heavy load and hadn’t been performing well.

@paperdigits Yes, Pixelfed.Social is a bit clunky this evening. (A problem caused by suddenly becoming very popular?)
