I had apparently joined pixelfed.de about a year ago but forgotten about it. I picked that instance because pixelfed.social wasn’t taking any new subscribers at the time. So I logged in to pixelfed.de yesterday but found it horribly slow. So I thought I’d create an account with pixelfed.social thinking it was maybe nearer me geographically. But it too was unusably slow. I don’t know if it’s temporary or always like that, but it will struggle to take off unless they can make it usable.
Incidentally, I do find the whole instance thing a bit off-putting. When I was trying out Lemmy and KBin a while ago, I was always being told that it doesn’t really matter which instance you create an account with because they should all talk to each other. Except other users will then tell you that it absolutely does matter because of the type of community each one has, what features the owner wants to implement, whether federation is on or off, how fast it responds, etc. But login information doesn’t carry over to different instances, so you end up being lucky with your first one, or you have to create accounts with each new instance… I get why some people immediately abandon it.
And of course the same issues apply to Pixelfed too. For me at least, the jury is still out on whether it’s something I want to pursue. I find this forum to be my favourite basically.
Well…I jumped on the opportunity. I joined the Pixelfed Pixtagram server in order to flood the masses with mediocrity
I like posting my photos here but I enjoy this forum more for it’s community and the playRAW.
I’ve never felt like dumping all of my photos here, though I have fought the urge several times.
I’m totally happy with Pixelfed and have been thoroughly enjoying it for last couple of years.
It’s been a bit slow the last few days with the massive influx of new users but I’m sure it will settle down. I’ve been glad to see that 99.9% of newcomers have been posting art and photography too, as opposed to lifestyle stuff and spam. Should that type of thing start to emerge it will be very straightforward to block it too. The fediverse model is resilient and flexible.
I highly recommend joining Pixelfed and spending a bit of time following hashtags and other people that you find interesting.
I always had this idea in my head that instead of using 1 really good loudspeaker, one should be able to achieve similar hi-fi quality with several mediocre loudspeakers. Maybe the same principle applies here.
Unfortunately, I was not able to find anything online that would prove this statement.
I can’t prove it in the traditional sense, but in the modern sense of not requiring proof of any kind, I can absolutely confirm that when I set my amp to “all speaker stereo”, it produces results that would make an audiophile weep at the realization that their hobby is meaningless…
Nice. But there must be some underlying principle like the sum of errors / deviations for multiple sources is smaller than the error of a single source. Which is potentially true if the deviations have a normal distribution.
Unfortunately, this is not true for humans. The more of them you add together the more stupid / irrational they usually behave. But this forum is probably not the right place for political discussions.
I guess if we would form a pixelfed community it would work rather nicely !
I’m all for a Pixelfed community. Interestingly, when I signed up, I immediately found @betazoid on the front page, so there was someone I could instantly follow.
As for political discussions, I suppose it’s refreshingly nice that this place is somewhat of a haven from all of that. I suspect that many of us will find common ground on what’s going on in the world, but obviously it can quickly become quite polarizing, and I like a lot of people here without knowing their allegiances. Maybe it’s best to keep it that way.
But being a forum of open-source/libre enthusiasts, it’s hard to imagine there are many here who would argue that oligarchies are the best way forward…
Finally managed to log into Pixelfed. App looks much improved. Happened to see this letter to Zuckerberg from Daniel, the developer. Daniel also posts on Bluesky
It’s hard to imagine someone like Zuck caring one bit about this. Once people reach a certain wealth/notoriety level, I sincerely believe most of them lose all touch with how the majority of people live and think.
I certainly hope Pixelfed succeeds even though I’m unsure how much I’m going to use it myself right now.
Yea, I think I am the person in this community who has the most followers on pixelfed, although, still not as many likes as I would like to have.
The last few days were really crazy on pixelfed.social. Every day I am getting dozens of new followers…
Well, I can say, all in all, I am satisfied with Pixelfed, but it does have it’s drawbacks as well. It’s not perfect, but see for yourself.
Well I used to use Instagram, and I can tell you, the word pixelfed was already blacklisted a few years ago. Once I mentioned pixelfed in a post and the pic was instantly shadowbanned.
The thing with pixelfed is that it’s a social thing, so being alone on your own instance is not the point. If you think you are a good photographer, you should want to be on pixelfed.social, there you can be seen by the largest number of people.
Yea, but pixelfed has the “most popular posts of the day on this server” (kind of like flickr explore used to be) page… so the more users on the server, the more fun it is… it has some things built in to boost popularity and that only works well if there are some people on the server. I think pixelfed is also made to boost the populary of pics that are on the same server.
According to my experiece, it’s much easier to start a new photo account on pixelfed than on mastodon.
