Bluesky-Based Instagram Rival to Launch

I also have to admit: the past months or so I have been almost completely passive on pixelfed, not giving many likes and shares but just getting them, well and producing content…

Ok, I just noticed: during the first days of the wave my new followers defintely came from pixelfed.social, but since one or two days they seem to come from other pixelfed instances as well.

I can’t upload anything at the moment. It’s got a few shots uploaded previously but can’t get it to work right now. Maybe the files are too big. Does it downscale the pics automatically, u know?

Edit: Only works in browser where I can adjust size

What does It mean?

“Federates” means that all the instances of pixelfed, mastodon, etc. can all talk to one another. This is done via a protocol called Activity Pub. It means you don’t need an account on the “flagship” server, because your posts from another served will be sent to the “flagship” server. Its very close to how email works: not everyone has gmail, but you can send and receive messages to/from gmail.

The idea of pixelfed/mastodon is that you can have a bunch of smaller instances that doesn’t can talk to one another.

I looked into pixelfed several months ago and found things a little sparse and not very responsive. After reading this thread I tried again and even uploaded some photos. Things are running much more smoothly and there seems to be a very large influx of new users on a daily basis. I absolutely refuse to participate in Instagram or any other social program that harvests information (X, FB especially). Although it can still be a little clunky I think pixelfed is something that I could really grow to like.

Yes. It’s improved in the past few days and I’ve posted a few items. Quite like that it’s photo focused and so far it does seem to be people interested in photography rather than memes

I didn’t see this thread before I made one about Cara, or I probably would have just posted it here. Regarding corporate-owned soc-med, I too am quite wary. That’s another thing I like about Cara: It’s user-funded (at least for now. I don’t think they have plans to accept investments, but I doubt they’ve explicitly pledged not to, as Pillowfort has). Bluesky seemed stable and safe (in sharp contrast to X), but their wishy-washy moderation regarding Jesse Singal damaged that reputation significantly.

Regarding federated social media, I support it in theory, although I haven’t often had a great user experience on Mastodon (indiepocalypse.social). What I look for in a server is good moderation, good community (vague, but includes how users interact with each other), and in the case of art servers, strict regulation of AI generated content (an outright ban, ideally). I haven’t found that last one in the server descriptions for Pixelfed so far, but Pixey and Gram.social specifies that they need to be labelled at least.

Very wise.

The trouble is that one has to go where one’s audience is, and my audience is not photographers, but musicians*. And they use Instagram. And they and all except one of my friends use Whatsapp. And meta is a horrible company, but … (shakes head in resigned despair)

*OK, some of them are photographers too, but I think they’ll be sticking with IG even for that.

The term “Freedom” may possibly lead to the misunderstanding that it is something that comes for free, but freedom never has. History leaves no doubt about this.
And one of the cost these days may be (for a period) to live somewhat disconnected from people close to oneself.

For my self, abstaining from participating in the systems that make up the surveillance economy and forms the economic basis of the oligarchs on prominent seating at the inauguration of the emperor without clothes, is the most “effective” thing I can do. (For me it entails the cost of not receiving all the messages and snaps of children and grandchildren that circulates among my close relatives and friends. But I shall look into the eyes of my grandchildren when they come to ask why our generation left them a world that is quite similar to the dystopics of “1984” and its likes, and tell them how I thought and behaved). Not being a supplier/customer is the market message the oligarchs cannot let be hearing if we are many enough sending it.

“Alone we can do nothing,” said 100 millions people and sat down again …

However, I do realize that if one are dependent on some kind of selling to an audience, it may be difficult. But I think that many of us can do more to advocate for a transition to other media and to accept that in a transition period there are downsides, but that in the long run they are worth it.

What’s you account name on PixelFed? I’m not active, but I signed up for being notified when the Android app was released and installed it straight away.

I’m happy to follow any of the pixls.us members

I’m still having a bit of an issue navigating it myself… I’m on the pixelfed.social server, in pixtagram.
Account name is AdamS

I’m trying to see how we can make a “starter pack” of pixls folks, it isn’t there in mastodon, but should be there in pixelfed, apparently.

FWIW, mine’s ‘tonybarrett’ on .social

The typical fediverse username format is @user@instance.tld
So for me it would be @nisdonatzsky@metapixl.com

Simply paste it into your client’s search field and it should find the account. A Mastodon account can follow a Pixelfed account and vice versa, although not all post types and features may be supported. Also, if you’re not on the same instance, older posts may not be visible.

The app you use is only relevant to you. To share your account, you would write it like this: @adams@pixelfed.social
However, that is someone called Jamie, so presumably your username is not Adams.

@AdamS mentions that he is on pixtagram - so I found (and followed him) as @adams@pixtagram.social

Must be case sensitive, I tried searching “@adams@pixtagram.social” and got the same result…but if I search @AdamS@pixtagram.social I do manage to find my account.
I’m looking forward to seeing more of all of your works.

Thanks. So mine should be

@tonybarrett@pixelfed.social

I suppose

@aShotInTheDark@pixelfed.social - but there’s not much there at this point.

Do you just mean people here sharing their IDs as is presently happening, or something more?
