Can not open a RW2 file from Panasonic Lumix S5 II...any ideas why?

I have a student with the latest Lumix S full frame camera and she can not open her raw files in Darktable. I tried on the latest Windows weekly build and I couldn’t open the image either. Yet I can open RW2 files but not this one. I am unsure if the file is a compressed RAW file. I will check her camera settings next week.

Well, it isn’t on the camera supported list, is it now?

Panasonic changed their compression algorithm and some recent cameras are not supported yet.*

* At least, not OOTB unless you make darktable use LibRaw as its raw loading backend for a particular raw file extension. Caveat emptor: this is an unsupported workaround.

@kmilos thanks for your response. Any idea when I might hope to see this camera supported?

Also I downloaded a sample RAW file from this website and it opened fine, so I am hoping she just has her camera set to a compressed RAW and that is the limit of the problem.

Of course the simple answer with any unsupported camera is patience and using Adobe’s DNG converter in the meantime. A free and simple solution for any one with an unsupported camera.

Strange. I randomly downloaded 21 RAWs from there, and none could be opened. Did you accidentally download an “original” from the jpeg section?

@apostel338 I downloaded a raw file and it opened on the latest windows weekly build of DT 4.90 +1170. It could be edited in the darkroom, so I was not just seeing the embedded JPG. But looking at the image data the camera was identified as a DC S5. I downloaded another file where the camera was identified as a DC S5M2 and it would not open. So it seems the website has included sample images from a S5 and stated they were from a S5 M2.

Ah, ok. But it looks like you somehow landed on the S5 page:

At least I can not find this file on the S5II page.

I am not sure how, but that appears to be the case.
