Spring is coming

Drove couple of hours along the coast to the quaint village of Alnmouth, which I’d seen in the distance from the train down to London several times, and then stopped off at Bamburgh Beach on the way back for sunset.

Bamburgh, a village of about 400 residents, has a bloody big castle on the beach.

Three hand-held shots of falling snow, developed with agx-emulsion, aligned with Hugin and then blended together using two channels of each to simulate a Harris shutter.

Where is this sculpture? Who does it depict?

It’s Melusina, the mermaid. It’s in Luxembourg, at the bank of Alzette river, opposite to Neimënster, former monastery, prison, and now events complex.

More from Bamburgh Beach

I guess that’s Lindisfarne Castle on Holy Island in the distance on the horizon in the last shot.

A colorful edit from today’s walk.

Yeah, we went for a walk today as well. The walk back was a little unsteady

We went for a tasting at a company that stores casks. You buy a cask, they store it and tap a bottle off for you whenever you want.

Of course, because it goes straight from cask to bottle, you get it at cask strength. We tasted 5, the lowest came out at 56.5% alcohol by volume. You can definitely characterise these as “falling over water”.

If it is too strong, you could always cut it (gently) with “good” water.

A few drops of water can open up the taste of whisky, especially if it is cask strength.

Some critters I saw yesterday at my local community garden. Spring is pretty much here now where I live, flowers and other plants are popping up, and lots more insects are showing up.

Based on the other topic I created about the hue-shifted flower, I decided to try all of these with sigmoid instead of filmic. I really like the end result and the process to get there was pretty simple. Using sigmoid for these types of shots feels a little easier to manage contrast, at least as far as my knowledge sigmoid and filmic goes (which is admittedly not much).

Those are accidents. Turns out that darktable doesn’t keep track of modified module order when copying from one image to another (several modules are in non-standard positions on the image I copied from). However, I genuinely like the result with its deep black.
The second one would probably make a good black metal album cover :D.
