I’m not sure what I’m more jealous of: the chance of listening to the remarkable Ana Popovic perform live, or the really cool photo.
I recently spent a week in southern Mississippi with some amateur astronomer friends, observing under reasonably dark skies. While it wasn’t clear every evening, it was nonetheless a relaxing and enjoyable time. Other than a little rain one evening it was generally beautiful spring weather.
One day I drove half an hour to Red Bluffs (“Mississippi Grand Canyon”) near Morgantown and took a look. These bluffs formed when the ground under a rural state highway eroded and caused the highway to collapse (it had to be moved twice). While obviously not approaching the size (nor geology) of the true Grand Canyon, it’s nevertheless an interesting place. Although it looks like rock, it’s mostly soil. There’s a hiking trail to a river at the bottom (including an old derailed train) but I didn’t have time to make the hike. I went first during the day just to check out the site, then came back the following morning for sunrise. Unfortunately (for sunrise shots, although not for astronomy), the skies were almost perfectly clear that morning.
This is a harsh-light image, but the pano gives a sense of scale. There’s far more off-frame, too.
I can understand why they moved the road…
Looks like Arizona colors.
Sunrise light on the “peak”.
My eyes were drawn back several times to this flowing pattern of brown debris, contrasting with the green pine trees.
Grand Canyon?
Shadow and light
Have a nice trip!
For soil, the colors look very rock-like

Wonderful photos, @lphilpot . I love the detail shots of the “canyon”.
Great captures @lphilpot
Beautiful pictures!
Thanks!
… and the thing is, even though it’s really just a big hole in the ground it seems like “somewhere else”. Obviously in the flat, dull deep south US, it doesn’t take too much to excite! LOL
So do I. I love the way the golden sunlight cimbines with the red colour of the rock to produce a warm, fire-like glow; I particularly like how it contrasts really well against the blue sky in the first shot.
We all have them — I’ve had slow months and even years!
I don’t think any of us are ever completely happy with anything — that’s why we keep trying (I think your photos are great, by the way ).
I like the third one. Really captures the character of a little bird.
Thank you for the encouraging words
Thank you, indeed Tits are quite something

Which one is better? I think early morning light was somehow not optimal
Both are interesting compositionally. I like having a closer foreground on the first image (and its more varied background), but the second one has a more interesting shape to the landform. All in all if I had to pick it would be the second one. I agree with you about the light. It’s warm morning light but looks a little yellow to me. Maybe that’s because of the foliage combining with blue water in an overall sense? Then again, for an island in the ocean maybe that’s appropriate…
Like the 2nd one the best, but not by much, as there is a lot less distracting elements. there is something with details and shadow enhancement that gives a HDR vibe that is a bit distracting … the colors are very flashy but I think it suit the scene.
Nice pictures, scenery, I’d like to be there !
I also prefer the second one, especially in the shadow areas. But where did the other island (upper left in first photo) go? Is it simply out of the perspective?
