Maybe this is already discussed before… So I am sorry if a decision is already made.
Would it be an idea to include references to good video resources explaining certain topics or modules (e.g., from Boris and Bruce) in the Darktable documentation, so that new users — or users who prefer watching videos over reading — can more easily find good explanations?
There is a topic about Planet Darktable, which might fit the bill somewhat. Personally, I’d be slightly hesitant about linking to channels, even if they are good, because it will be a form of endorsement, and you’ll forever have to monitor that channel and its content to prevent a situation where the channel gets deleted or turns to shit. Having an aggregating page like Planet means you only have to keep the links in one spot, and as a bonus you’ll have a wider range of subjects, and a wider range of media — not everybody prefers video.
Let me clarify what I am proposing. Yes, it is not that there are no references to other resources. Thank you for sharIng.
My suggestion is that in the documentation, for example on the page of the color balance rgb module a section is added say additional resources or useful resources with links to YouTube or other good resources, that actually explain how to use the color balance rgb module.
This makes the documentation - I think - more useable for people that prefer other methods than reading to understand what a certain module or function does.
Regarding the endorsement. Yes, that might been a thing. But that can be handled by a notice that it a not to endorse these other resources but about helping the user.
Pretty much none of the darktable devs or documentation authors release youTube videos, but we do write code / documentation. So the documentation is in our control but youTube is not. Plus I’d want to watch a youTube video before endorsing it and I do not intend to do that.
So you’d like someone else to suffer. I understand
Actually, I had been thinking to contribute to darktable in this way. Helping new users to make sense of it all. But seems that there is no support adding that the documentation. So suggestion cancelled.
You can still do that. There are other places than the documentation to share videos. We’re not saying that it wouldn’t be useful, just that we don’t want to maintain it in the manual.
Yep, that is an idea… but not one that really helpful. The problem is that searching on YouTube is a disaster. And not helpful for new people into darktable. And YouTube is not organised, that is whole problem…
I can understand that it not desirable in the documentation. I will think of another way.
I had suggested reposting YouTube videos with a brief summary. Providing a playlist could be useful too.
Putting this type of stuff in the documentation isn’t a great idea for reasons already discussed in this topic, but that doesn’t mean it’s not valuable.
I think planet darktable is the way forward. New users could click on a link and see other contributions by the author (especially youtube). Should new users be spoonfed? I’m not an expert but I do like exploring this fascinating software and planet darktable is a great finding tool.
But is unorganised. Just a long list of (potential) good resources. That doesn’t help if you are new. Or is you are looking for specific thing. It is a really great list of ‘what is currently going on in the world of darktable’ it is very bad in finding out 'how do I use the ‘module x’
Dare I mention the AI acronym? I’ve found them helpful and Gemini often includes youtube links.
But isn’t the researching part of the processing fun? Seeing what someone else has done (especially in playraw) and gone wow must try that!
