Datetime information

Hello

Now and then I try to look in to a problem I always had with darktable. The absence of datetime information in the Image Information window. As I rely on date when I sort the images the only way of finding out when a picture is taken is to go back to windows explorer.

Yesterday I found out that the date information is correct in the database, but when I checked the xmp files there was no dateinformation until the files imported with darktable 3. To this I can add that none of my 15 000+ images have this dateinformation. The images also comes from differnt cameras, Nikon, Panasonic, Canon and different phone cameras.

Today I use darktable 3 rc2 on Win 10 Swedish. I use an English darktable but I have also tried to change this to Swedish without effect. I can also add that it is just the dateinformation that is missing, model, maker, lens and gps information is all there, just the date is missing.

I would very much appreciate advice on how to correct this.

Hm, regarding the first question, the user manual tells that the datetime is shown: “Image information” in the darktable usermanual

If it is in xmp I don’t know. IIRC, for 3.0, the handling of time correction changed such that it is now in the xmp. But that may be the correction only.

About Swedish, it may be that the translation is not complete, IIRC only translations that reach a certain percentage of translated strings are included.

As I am not at my computer, I cannot check, so all this information may be outdated or wrong.

Yes, I agree with you, the manual show the way it should look but instead of the date and time I can only see a hyphen.

The reason I discussed Swedish an English versions of darktable was that sometimes there are different dateformats in different languages but this made no difference.

However, for me it´s a bit strange that I can see all EXIF information except the date an time.

Can any other software read the date time where darktable can’t?

Well, darktable can read it because I always sort by date and time and I also can use the variable $(EXIF_… for date and time.

Why would you expect it to be in the xmp?!? As far as I remember, if you check with exiv2 the information is in the EXIF data itself.

Sorry, I have a question to be sure.

When darktable presents the DateTime, is it the exif data tag 306 showing the last image modification date or the DateTime original, tag 36867 showing when the photo was taken?

I saw SW mofifying the first in raw files. Don’t remember which.

the tag that exiftool calls -datetimeoriginal

I checked with ExifTool and there it is called DateTimeOriginal and this is the field I can/cannot see.

Thanks. Then that should be better to name it DateTimeOriginal as in the exif spec to avoid confusion.

Maybe you are right about this but I was just using the heading from darktable, to avoid confusion :wink:
This afternoon I made another test and found that on a Linux mint box the date is there. Yes, I used the same images as in my windows installation.
Right now I am pretty fed up with this so I’ll rest for a while.

Hm, that this happens on windows only makes me wonder if this is an exiv2 issue or exiv2 dependency/build issue. Are other information that would require exiv2 missing as well?

Yes, I see that. I was asking about the output of that tag from exiftool, not darktable.
