When I use sigmoid which is the equivalent?

Sigmoid and Filmic are both the equivalent of Basecurve. They are all tone mappers that do fundamentally the same thing, just in slightly different ways.

I pride myself in the fact that, when I give advice and people follow it, their life usually improves. And people who keep ignoring them often complain that darktable is bad, scene-referred sucks, and why-the-fuck-did-you-change-display-referred-that-got-me-faster-results. I think Sigmoid should be easier for a beginner with DT 5.

At the point where he uses Filmic, you can just use Sigmoid, if you prefer.
