Great Tit, bright sky and unatural green

Hi there,

I’m struggling with this picture: I find the highlight transitions weird and I can’t find natural looking colors for the blue and green. Maybe it’s me, but I feel something is off. What do you think?

I’ve tried both AgX and filmic v5/v7 but other than for some details in the highlights, I can’t really find out a good result overall.

Here is the result of one of my attempt with filmic:

And here is the RAW file

I’m quite new around here (and in photography/darktable in general), I already learned a lot by reading previous discussions and other Play Raw. I’m eager to see what people will come up with!

When you share a file for other people to edit, we’ll need you to add a CC license to it
Since you cannot edit your own posts yet, you can add another message with the quoted text below.

For next time, you can use the PlayRaw preset when creating a topic (it will add that automatically) or just copy and paste this:

Sorry, didn’t know there was a preset. Thanks for pointing out!

No problem. I always use the preset, it makes things a bit easier.

Oh, I forgot – we also share the .xmp file that Darktable creates so that others can see your exact edits and study them

Lovely photo.

I actually liked the direction you were going with the greens in your post. They have a “new leaf” vibe. Since you are not happy, I went with a warmer sunlight look. I have no idea if this is closer…or further…from what you see in your 'mind’s eye".

After @Vente’s edit I think I should have done it this way:

Even though I like my first edit in general, it’s rubbish in the end. A great tit is yellow, not reddish.

That is a beautiful little bird. Great shot!

It was indeed a difficult picture, but I’ve managed to figured out something that works… here’s my take.

Lovely pic. How’s this? The blue background is a little difficult, yes, it tends to lean into purple or cyan quite easily. I think Colour Equaliser is doing most of the work here, so small tweaks to that will change the background.

Edit: I oversharpened and introduced colour noise with capture sharpening. I’ve reduced that, and the DorS sharpening too. Small bird brightness tweak as well.

I live in a land with no great tits. It is very sad. I had no idea they were yellow/green. So, a re-do:

Up to this statement, I was able to avoid to think into the wrong direction.

Took today off to play my clarinet and now that that’s over with, just felt like playing a bit.

Whoever named these birds didn’t think it through very well
It’s a problem to talk about them nowadays as messages get blocked by filters

But my favorite is a bird called bushtit. I struggle not to read it as bull :poop:
