Harsh lighting and retaining details in Mountain/Landscape shots

Hi, I’m new to raw editing and photography in general. Although I have quite some experience in editing and color grading videos (FPV footage) and already know a lot of basics, I recently got my first mirrorless camera (Sony a6400) and have been trying to learn Darktable to process my photos.

Here’s the .jpg example of a photo I took in pretty harsh/bad lighting (high dynamic range), it’s not particularly a good photo but for the purpose of learning to edit better in general I think it’s a good example:

And here is my current edit:

How would you go about trying to retain the details and contrast in the highs and lows better and avoid clipping? Also wondering about color grading/ style advice. Would appreciate any workflow suggestions, example edits.

My attempt, the major action was to mask off the sky and drop its exposure.

Color balance to lift the shadows and drop the sky even more.

Color calibration using the RGB tabs for channel mixing and color grading, as well as lowering the brightness of the sky.

Haze removal and sharpening.

I didn’t like the out of focus flowers, so I cropped to get rid of them.

Hello, and welcome to the forum!
This is a beautiful scenery - where was the picture taken?

Here’s my quick attempt at this …
Made with darktable 5.1

darktable 5.0.1

I didn’t even try to recover the sky—apart from one cloud in the upper right, there’s nothing up there that really adds to the subject. The scene itself is very high in contrast, so why not show that in the photo as well? Funny enough, I ended up using the same 4:5 crop as @JankoK :slightly_smiling_face:

I warmed up the colors a bit, increased saturation, boosted the contrast, and slightly darkened the lower section as well as the rocks at the top.

Thanks so much for the photo—really like it!

For me the blue sky was important so I did try and recover that.

Thanks a lot guys, I really like both the versions from @Vulpy and @JankoK. I’m definitely gonna take a look at these edits more in depth.

It’s shot in Switzerland (I live here)

Give it a few more days—there are bound to be at least a dozen more edits coming for such a beautiful and challenging image. :grinning:

Welcome to pixls and thanks for the play!

I went with something a little soft and muted, prioritizing the atmospheric effects.
