Hi, I’m new to raw editing and photography in general. Although I have quite some experience in editing and color grading videos (FPV footage) and already know a lot of basics, I recently got my first mirrorless camera (Sony a6400) and have been trying to learn Darktable to process my photos.
Here’s the .jpg example of a photo I took in pretty harsh/bad lighting (high dynamic range), it’s not particularly a good photo but for the purpose of learning to edit better in general I think it’s a good example:
How would you go about trying to retain the details and contrast in the highs and lows better and avoid clipping? Also wondering about color grading/ style advice. Would appreciate any workflow suggestions, example edits.
I didn’t even try to recover the sky—apart from one cloud in the upper right, there’s nothing up there that really adds to the subject. The scene itself is very high in contrast, so why not show that in the photo as well? Funny enough, I ended up using the same 4:5 crop as @JankoK
I warmed up the colors a bit, increased saturation, boosted the contrast, and slightly darkened the lower section as well as the rocks at the top.
