HDR with no overdone effect

Hi!
I know it was rainy, however I’d like to see some life in this picture, especially get rid of bland blown white sky.

I could get inspired if you helped

Since I had taken nine bracketed photos, I went for HDR Merge in Affinity Photo, but I suppose better effect can be obtained from a single unclipped frame in Darktable, but how?

That HDR looks quite muddy to my eye.

And perhaps slightly over-the-top HDR effect …

Also made with darktable 5.3.0+251~ga22c4eeb89 (AgX, test version)

I didn’t want to make the sky dramatic. I wanted it to look natural. I made it darker than I would have done for my own pictures only because you wanted a HDR look. The sky distracts from the church and having it over exposed would be my preference.

OK; admit my last effort way too unnatural (but not deleting). Kept this one simple. Did dup exclusion and enhance the details (G’MIC Freaky Details). Simple and with the added bonus of looking much more natural, imo. Also, no clone/heal brush work (as I had no choice my last effort and even that was shoddy; lol).

I am not familiar with DNG, is there more than one frame in that file? The histogram looks very squished when opened in darktable.

HDR (as in for HDR display) version
