For $10k USD you could have a GFX100S II and two lenses, just sayin
Still not a rangefinder though. At least they have some sort of competition now with Pixii Max.
I often wonder who buys a Leica nowadays when other cameras from Canon and others surpass in tech. I think only the lens of a Leica is still above all.
Maybe, the lack of sales forces the company to price their products so high with the belief whoever wants a Leica will pay any price
Haven’t met anyone brandishing a Leica in the last 10 years. I own one which is a 1948 rangefinder my dad owned and it has passed on to me. People often ask if the company still exist. The same is true of the other camera I inherited from my dad. It is a Plaubel Makina. My dad hid it from the British during WWII because the authorities were confiscating all high end cameras (all were obviously german) for ariel photography. That company has definitely folded up
To be fair, internal memory is much more robust and reliable than SD cards, which use the lowest quality memory chips and also live by design in fragile plastic enclosure that constantly get banged around, bent, etc…
I agree though that it should be easily replaceable for any user, hence the M.2 2230 format. It takes almost no space, could be inserted in a similar socket to CF Express, etc. And most of all it’s cheap, fast, low power and reliable.

I guess this is a good compromise
The only thing that would make it better is being able to mount the card whilst it’s inside the camera.
I don’t know if it strictly meets the definition
I’m a member / bit of a lurker in a street photog discord based in London and there’s definitely an admiration/interest in Leica there though I think most don’t own one.
Tbf, most of us are hobbyists, which almost by definition involves non-essential purchases, I suppose.
Even that is probably questionable these days. Although there’s probably an argument to be made about rangefinder lenses inherently being more compact, and perhaps a focus on rendering aesthetics instead of technical measures such as resolution?
I guess that’s the overall idea with Leica anyway, experience over practicality. That’s an argument I can support. If they were sold for a reasonable price, I’d even be interested. But I guess that’s what Fujifilm is for.
If I had 10k$ I’d buy this camera (no screen, no sensor) ![]()
Not to be anal about it but it has a segmented display, counts as a screen ![]()
Just look at the location of Leica stores. They are usually in some high-profile shopping area, where you find art galleries, shops selling expensive designer handbags, mechanical watches, etc.
There are lots of affluent people in the developed world who can and are willing to afford $10k (or even much, much more — just look at watches) on a product just because it signals some kind of social status.
Yes, I think it is a Veblen good.
Regardless of optical quality, rangefinder lenses have a host of practical problems. The main one is the mechanical coupling, which needs to be recalibrated/readjusted from time to time. You can DIY it, but sometimes the camera needs to be adjusted too and then for most people it is time for a visit to the Leica store.
The whole experience is not unlike an expensive mechanical watch: it is a wonder of engineering, but for the purposes of keeping time, a radio-controlled solar watch will run circles around it (if you have reception, you will have exact time forever with 0 maintenance).
Leica for $10k is more fashion than camera … I know I know … Fashion and style is so important for certain people … You’re maybe one of them
I am not going to support such a values in the world where children starve to death on the other side of the globe …
Leica uses business and pricing model based on exclusivity … I consider this model as dubious and despicable …
I don’t think you’re wrong, exactly, but unless you live your life like Peter Singer, it’s quite hard to argue that anyone who has more than enough for their needs isn’t guilty of this, I suppose. (We’re also in danger of getting political, which maybe doesn’t make for the best kind of internet discussion in my experience).
I am not sure I would ever buy a Leica (even if I had tons of money — though there is no immediate danger of that
), but I am happy that they exist, just like I am happy that Pentax is making DSLRs, even though I am not buying one.
Specifically, when all camera makers are stuffing their cameras with ML-trained coprocessors that recognize everything under the sun for the purposes of AF, it is nice to see digital cameras that stick to the basics. Frankly, I think that they need the Leica brand to pull it off, if Panasonic or Sony or Fujifilm or Nikon or Canon released a back-to-basics camera, however superb, most reviews would be discussing how it fails their AF test of focusing on dolphins doing synchronized swimming or whatever.
Incidentally, thanks for linking Martin Castein’s channel here, I was not aware of it. I learned a lot of new stuff about 85mm composition from this video I just watched, his channel is a goldmine.
well, please let’s not be relativistic … of course this is highly philosophical discussing … I hope that I am kind of kind who will not buy Ferrari because he can afford that … I would not spend $1000 on jacket just because I like it … it’s meh … and same with all other stuff including cameras …
but ofc everybody can do whatever they wish … I am just only sharing my thoughts on this matter … I don’t judge guys with Leicas, Ferraris and $1k jackets …
I value experiences more than things. I would pay 10K for a trip. excursion, or experience if it was worth to me far quicker than I would a camera, car or some other toy. I own a 7 year old Subaru and it will likely be the last new car I ever own as I approach retirement, heck it only has about 100K so it might be my last car ever ![]()
Thanks one and all for sharing your thoughts…there is always something interesting that comes out of these discussions. Truth be told I would bet unless things change that 80% of the photo’s I take during the rest of my life will be taken using my phone or next phone… I really just take photo’s to document where I go and what I am doing and some family events so I don’t plan any thing or stalk wildlife. I am very impressed by those with the skill, passion and commitment to do so. I am more just taking a photo in the moment and I would have to start walking around with a camera all the time which I don’t see happening… So no fear of me spending 10K on any camera at this point in my life…even if I can afford it ![]()
Same here! One of the reasons is that I would not recognize a $1k jacket ![]()
