I’ve seen your messages. The high end GPU requirements you found are for training AI models, which is very different from what RapidRAW does. You don’t need a powerful AI card.
The crash you’re experiencing is likely a graphics driver or API compatibility issue with your specific hardware, not just the amount of VRAM. As the main developer, my time is focused on building new features and fixing bugs that affect many users, not testing every possible hardware configuration (I don’t even have access to all kinds of configurations).
Please try downloading the latest version, as updates can sometimes resolve these issues. If it still crashes, the best place for this is a bug report on the GitHub Issues page.

Just curious – Why does it want to install by default under my profile (on Win 11) despite my account being a local admin? I don’t want to bloat my profile with software installations. That’s why, one reason of many, my account is a local admin on the box.
I had to explicitly run the installer as admin in order to install into C:\Program Files\RapidRaw, the standard location for installed 64-bit software.

A couple of initial comments / suggestions / food for thought:
First with the dark theme (which I would call a “black” theme in places) lighten, outline or somehow make the (toggle switch) controls more delineated from the background. Unless some are on and others off, it’s difficult to tell at a glance whether they’re enabled or disabled. A bit of color might go a long way.
I find my eye / brain reaction to the very high-contrast controls, i.e.:
…creates a negative image after-effect that interferes with determining its state. Maybe just lightening the dialog background a bit would help?
Also, curious why “RAW highlight recovery” is a global preference? It’ll vary per image so why not make it an editing tool rather than a preference?
Side note, for what it’s worth: “RAW” isn’t an acronym, so all caps isn’t necessary. Decades ago there was a “RAW” image format but it had nothing to do with our current raw digital camera files. Kind of like those who write “MAC” when referring to Apple computers, but are inadvertently referring to “Media Access Control” instead.
And (unexpectedly) a bug report: Opening community presets will reliably abend on my computer. Click the button, the blank panels with circling busy indicators appear and *poof*. (Windows 11 Home, 24H2)

I thoroughly cleaned everything from the previous version of RapidRAW. I installed the new version and the effect is that when I click any option, the program closes.
On win11 many modern apps will try to install that way esp if they come from the Microsoft store.
I think I also saw something about MS and local accounts recently… I think it’s not going to let you authenticate things when necessary from local accounts… I would have to go back and read again to confirm that… There was some restriction that sounded like it was coming…
ChatGPT does not know about such a new app, asking it is pretty much useless. It can only provide generic answers (like it did), which may not be relevant.
That said, 512 MB of VRAM and 3.5 GB of system RAM is really not much.

Sandboxed Store apps are MSIX installers, this was a standard installer. They still install under Program Files but in a mostly inaccessible directory tree.
It’s nothing that can’t be worked around, I was just curious. At home it’s not a much of a thing, but in an AD environment it’s possible (although usually due to a poor implementation) that parts of the profile can get copied up and down to the network at times. Stick a large program in there and you can see how it can possibly affect performance. But again at home that’s usually not a problem as such.
I don’t use a Microsoft account, just a local machine account.

I have been using the latest 1.5.3 version of RapidRaw and it has some really nice features. It says it has a version of AgX for tone mapping but I can’t see the features from AgX in darktable.
The masking is advanced and very useful. It seems to trade processing sophistication for UI simplicity, and the IQ is so far not quite as good as darktable but still very good.
It doesn’t have an image library like darktable. Just folders to manage which is awkward if you have a lot of folders. But the development progress is rapid.

I’m impressed with the amount of work he’s managed to do in under a year. The UI is a little bit clunky & confusing at times but the program overall shows promise.

I had a play with this. Seriously impressive, able to get nice looking photos very easily. Congratulations on all your work.
Just a few things I noticed. Output is quite noisy (compared to darktable) especially in uniform areas such as skys at higher isos.
I couldn’t find any noise reduction, perhaps I wasn’t looking in right place. Just a basic noise reduction to remove colour noise that is easy to implement would be useful, doesn’t always need to be a super duper AI algorithm as many recent cameras don’t produce lots of noise.
Also wasn’t quite sure how sharpening was implemented. Is there a way to make it just sharpen details and leave out smooth areas to avoid introducing unnecessary noise?

Ok found the denoise tool in context menu now. It does work well but just takes a long time. Personally I think a basic wavelet denoise for everyday images would be useful.
I finally got around to trying RapidRaw. On my laptop, it is slow but so is DT. On my desktop with its aging Nvidia 1060 GPU and a fully updated Manjaro OS I succeeded in building it and running it initially with loads of crashes and freezes as a result.
Switching the processing backend to Vulkan and Linux Compatibility Mode to On made all the difference. I’m running it through its paces. RR is not going to wean me from DT any time soon (mostly due to its still-missing geometry correction and autocrop and the pretty basic Lensfun module) but it is definitely fast and the automatic corrections on my raws form a decent basis for further edits in Gimp/GMIC/Digikam
Rapid raw has an android build…it’s nice. It looks limited somewhat like I couldn’t select multiple images to stack for HDR etc even though the menu was there but got a beta it is really nice. I don’t mind seeing FOSS editors on android at all!

Hi Timon, I wanted to try out RapidRAW after looking through the documentation, but I am experiencing some issues.
For reference: I am on Windows, and the folder I am accessing in RR is on a Network connected NAS. My internet is not super fast. I usually use darktable, and before that lightroom. Both work well although not super fast.

When I opened the folder in RR, it took a really long time to begin loading previews. I know it will take longer on the first opening of a folder, but this seems extreme. Also, it takes 5-10 seconds to see a visual change when adjusting something like the exposure/ev-shift control.

After opening an image in the editor window, and starting to adjust things like the tone mapper, exposure, ev shift, etc. the window would freeze and then become partially transparent:

Anyways, I am excited for this project, and I just wanted to let you know about this. I believe there is already open issues on github for these: #1597, #972 but I wanted to add my experience.
