IRC or alike for casual conversations

In Random thoughts and finds, there was a mention of an IRC that is for this forum. I found something here

But idk if it’s active at all. Is there any interest in such thing - to have a chatroom for causal conversations, that don’t really fit the use of Lounge threads?

Or does one actually exist that I’m not aware of?

If not IRC, then perhaps a server in an app like Fluxer could be made, since Discord’s privacy and current-day shenanigans are not acceptable for our purpose.

I wonder if anyone would be interested…

I might be interested but I’m wondering what the advantages are over this forum.

I think he’s just wanting some unstructured chatting, instead of the formal Forum structure.

Yeah, that’s a pretty neat description of what I meant. Threads on forums (in general) don’t feel like a fitting place for casual talks

The IRC channel does still exist and it is active

Is that the one I sent in the original post?

Yes it’s #pixls.us on oftc (though a lot of us access it via Matrix)

What I like about Discord-like apps is the ability to edit/format messages and attach media, custom emojis and such… idk to what extent the IRC allows any of these? (tbf I have no experience with Matrix yet)

The matrix room just acts as a bridge to the IRC channel, so you should generally avoid Matrix-specific stuff when in the bridged room (as it might look weird to the IRC users)

I see… Editing messages is something I’d miss the most, considering the way I type - I often notice something after sending or even proofreading my message

Matrix is the protocol. I use Element (cellphone app/flatpak) to connect to multiple matrix channels. You can edit post or use the BBS style of posting.

You can edit, but AFAIK IRC clients just see the edit as a new message
