Folks, I haven’t contributed to a Playraw for a while…so here’s a couple of options. I got these yesterday at the Jackass Mountain Summit, which is near to where I’ve been working… and the conditions were almost perfect for the shot I was hoping for. A bit less low cloud, or even lower low cloud would have been great…but I don’t control the weather directly.
I haven’t done much to these except add the dt Sony a6300 camera style so that an .xmp could be added. Photo was taken with a Sigma f8 600mm reflex lens.
Have fun with these however you see fit…my only request is that those few rays of light get retained.

Didn’t like the yellow even though it likely is eye accurate. Tried to color balance (eyeballed) and cleaned.

Great photos… thanks for giving us the opportunity to play.

Here’s my go… using RT 5.12-318 dev, and very little adjustment, only using a global spot to tone map using Dynamic and exposure tool, and a bit of adjustment on CAM16 lightness, chroma and contrast. Edit: forgot to add that I changed WB to RGB grey

beautiful mountain and light! do you know where it got it’s name?

anyways, felt like going overboard with this one:

vkdt render, mostly grade (lift/gamma/gain) and added contrast wherever possible.

I did a quick and lazy search and found this after the first couple of results:
It is named for the muletrains that ventured north to the Cariboo gold fields; apparently some did not make it over the bluff and perished in a fall, hence the name.

Love 'em!

My take. I tried to stay close(ish) to reference material. You could go bonkers on the dodge & burn with this image if you were so inclined.

I say go nuts…I haven’t even taken a real shot at these yet…a couple others in the series, but not these ones. :+1:

With Darktable 5.5.0:

Summary of edits:

  • Cooled off white balance
  • Applied haze removal to increase contrast
  • Went crazy with color calibration: grayscale + multiply blend mode mask
  • denoise with non-local means
  • Sharpen with diffuse or sharpen module (basically just “sharpen>strong” preset)
  • Further increased contrast with AgX

I tried to lessen the cloud on the left side of the mountain’s bright face.

I think I went a little overboard with the darkening, probably would go closer to @AtaraxicShrug’s lighting if I did it again.

This is a great picture! Thanks for sharing. It kind of reminds me of the Sawtooths in Idaho where I live. I’d love to take a trip to BC sometime!

With Ansel (.xpm file is not attached because it is not compatible.)

Cheers.
