Masking subject in Darktable

I am new to DT having moved from LRc, I photo animals (e.g. cheetah) and colourfull birds. In LRc using object detection was easy to change exposure etc to an animal or bird. In DT using masking is more difficult (for me). I have tried parametric masks to separate the subject from the background. where i run into problems is with a cheetah’s spots to select the whole animal. I have tried path masks but not able to easily capture the whole subject I would really appreciate any help with this…

Beginner struggling with Darktable masks...HELP please!

Hi - I’m marching up the learning curve…have realised how powerful Darktable parametric masks can be but am struggling to make them work. I seem to be ham-fisted with the sliders…most tries result in it all turning yellow Any general hints? First off…in general, should I use the input or output sliders? Separate the object from the background with masks in darktable?
