I am new to DT having moved from LRc, I photo animals (e.g. cheetah) and colourfull birds.
In LRc using object detection was easy to change exposure etc to an animal or bird.
In DT using masking is more difficult (for me). I have tried parametric masks to separate the subject from the background. where i run into problems is with a cheetah’s spots to select the whole animal. I have tried path masks but not able to easily capture the whole subject
I would really appreciate any help with this, or maybe point me to a video or other way to learn.
TIA
Glyn
I’ve moved this to Software/darktable.
You can combine parametric and drawn masks, and mask refinement can help. The spots can be a problem.
A recent, related thread is How can I add (not subtract) a vectorshape or a paintbrush to a parametric mask?. Try searching the forum for mask video in the darktable category (the filter is under the advanced section of the search dialogue).
Hi and welcome!
Let me point you to the manual:
https://docs.darktable.org/usermanual/4.6/en/darkroom/masking-and-blending/masks/
and some video resources:
Bruce Williams masking trilogy (episode 109-112)
Boris Hajdukovic masking trilogy (episode 67-69)
Maybe post a throwaway image that you can share as an example and see what people come up with??
Please post an image as this topic you have brought up is very interesting and I would love to see DT users solutions.
Can i upload a raw file or would you prefer a jpg?
RAW please.

I’ve added a rough drawn mask to exposure as a test, and enabled refinement. Is that good enough?

Thank you Kofa, it is a new thought process that i have to get my head around. in some ways, forgetting how LRc works.
