Yes, that’s why we use the average reading provided by darktable (which may not be the average of min and max; an area with a min pixel 0, 0, 0 and max 10, 10, 10 may have an overall average of 0.2, for example).

Thanks all for the input here, and thanks a lot @kofa for your poll in Discussion/poll: AgX defaults I can confirm that after (admittingly limited) testing these two matched curves give much better results.
