.NEFX editing in Darktable

Hy there.
First, merry Christmas to all. I was wondering if someone already looked in to this. I am trying out the pixelshift option in my new z8. I was wondering if there is some development to get it working. Or if it would be possible at all. I don’t have the knowledge to get more infos on that topic. If necessary i could provide a sample file. I would like to edit the merged images in darktable as i know it well and i don’t think that the nikon software is as powerfull. I know i could export them as tiff files. I was wondering if this would give me some loss in image quality?

I defer to more knowledgeable people who answer here, especially the developers. I suspect pixel shifting is not on the radar for DT. However, this article might provide some useful suggestions for you.

Pixelshift2dng works only with pentax and sony. I think it is because those two brands combine the images in camera.

It seams the new version of libraw supports nefx. Is there a way to update it? I tried it with compiling it myself. But libraw in synaptic is still on the old version. Maybe i am missing something. Every help for somebody who understands zero in doing such things is highly appreciated.

I prefer to use RawTherapee for pixelshift files (Pentax) but I decided long ago that the file size and processing overhead is not worth it to me when comparing the outcome to a regular Pentax raw file.

I’ve got a Z6III which I would love to be able to use with pixel shift.

Hi
I got it working somehow. I now have a winn11 virtual machine running on my ubuntu. I use the win11 to run nxstudio and adobe raw converter. I convert the merged files to dngs and then edit them in darktable. I did a test with a scan of a 4x5 negative. The detail is awesome. What os and editing software are you using?

Linux and darktable. Scanning negatives is one of the things I’d eventually like to use pixel shift for. I think the ideal flow would script tethered shooting of pixel shift images and the mechanical processing leaving a file for artistic processing.

I don’t think you get a chance to merge the nefx on linux at the moment. As far as i know only a few softwares support nefx. Could you explain why you would like to do the pixelshift tethered?

When I get round to scanning negatives it will be easier to press a button on the PC, have the image taken and pre-processed, avoiding having to worry about file handling. I would only need to store the pre-processed image.

Thethering should be possible in nxstudio. As far as i know you don’t need to process the raw images before merging. And for shooting, you need to press the shutter once and the camera takes the whole set of images.

Let me know if you found a solution that works for you. I am at the moment upgrading my pc hardware because 32gigs of ram was not sufficient to load a couple merged 180mpix files in darktable :grimacing:
