Photography light setup

Starting a new phase of education in my photographic adventures. I am setting up to learn intentional lighting. The lights I bought are, essentially a starter set but seem to get the job done. Got lucky at the thrift store on the grey sheet for a neutral background for the time being. If you notice the red little contraption below the desk it’s a battery from camping gear. I am hoping to take the show on road when I can get out to nature again and all the lights are usb powered.

The lights are turned down (-25% or so) enough to lower shadow cast but would appreciate some feedback on the setup. The test photos are to show the effects. Any pointers (books, sites, etc.) for learning lighting better would also be much appreciated. Aside from doing stills to practice I would like to focus on food photography when I am not running around the woods.

[edit] Thanks everyone. A lot of great pointers. Been checking them out all day. I look forward to sharing some results, good ones hopefully.

Lots of great content on lighting here: https://www.youtube.com/@VisualEducationStudio

If you’re interested in a more commercial style of food photography, this YouTube channel has some good videos: https://www.youtube.com/@TinHouseStudioUK

Thank you!

This fellow does very nice demos:

He does a standard format in most episodes, 10-20 minutes to show a full project including composition, lighting (the bulk of most episodes), and final processing (very brief). After you’ve seen one or two, you can skip through the others to see the key ideas in terms of lighting without necessarily watching the whole clip.

An important aspect of lighting is the size of the light source(s). This affects the apparent orientation of surfaces, and rendering of textures. This is evident in the OP photos.
