Indeed. The same is by the way true for most mechanical parts, which follow the damage tolerance design philosophy. The growth of a potential damage is slow enough so that the residual strength of the structure is sufficient until the next inspection interval.
And critical hydraulic or electrical lines are redundant and routed along different parts of the aircraft, so that e.g. a uncontained engine failure or tyre debris can never knock-out all lines.

My car has ACC too (I love it).
In my city is a street. It’s a straight stretch that ends with a fairly sharp curve. The speed limit is 50 km/h, and the curve itself makes it impossible to go any faster. My car, however, indicates that the speed limit is 90 km/h, and with a certain ACC setting, it would actually drive at that speed.

IIRC, also because they wanted to opt for Godzilla, but the name was already used. Hence the change for Gojira.

But what if they are using the same AI?

Perhaps the team writing the voting mechanism is using AI

Tomorrow, I will make a trip to Karlovy Vary… and I have no camera as my old one is on its final journey to Portugal and I have to wait until I can get a new one. So I have to take pictures with the smartphone… :sob:

On the other hand, if I take a look at the https://ippawards.com/ or at the https://mobilephotoawards.com/ , then it shows once more that good photography depends mostly on the photographer, not the camera…

I’ll switch to Pro-mode and activate raw capturing and maybe I can get some nice pictures.

And on the editor  Smartphone cameras are actually capable, they are IMO hindered by shooting non RAW and just dealing with the default jpeg. All those examples in the ippawards look great because they are not sooc, although it seems the participants can only edit on the phones themselves.

Since a few weeks, I have activated RAW, but I have not yet exported them. I will try my best tomorrow with the S21 and search the .dng files on the phone to edit them in darktable. Maybe I can create a play_raw if there are any presentable pictures.

FYI, Firefox will be introducing a new design next week. Apparently, they want to rebrand as the purple browser. I find it hideous.

Here’s how they motivate their new “Nova” design in Firefox: “When it came to design, we wanted Firefox to feel current, but not generic. Warm, but still precise. More expressive, but never louder than the web itself.” Completely empty, meaningless words. No justification.

Managers nowadays get promoted for shipping new things, not fixing old things. Hence we have to re-shuffle all settings of all apps every few years, and change the look of everything every once in a while. There used to be a time where this stuff was driven by usability studies, but that was a long time ago. UI design is now just endless wave after wave on the computer’s shore. Inescapable, constant, mindless churn.

I’ll get used to this one, too. I’m not even angry. Just… tired.

Yeah I also really don’t care for the new design. I like my tabs kinda square. The new design just looks more like chrome :-1:.

Beautiful APOD today. The sky reminded me of @popanz rendition of @VOLe97 's Playraw.

Has anyone heard about this? I have never imagined something like this could become true. Or actually, I’ve never thought this could be a thing at all.

You won’t be sure if you watched the same thing as the people you shared it with. Or have any idea what a comment is talking about – as that’s not in the cut you watched.

:face_vomiting:

I just took a look. It sucks. As expected. Really nasty.

Why do UI “designers” always try to turn our desktop into a hideous parody of our phone? Has no one ever thought about actual usability?

“Oohh… If I get a 38” monitor I can have 6" wide buttons!! Wow !"

Not.

There is something to be said about margins and padding, but current Firefox already looks pretty good, I don’t get why they are doing this.

I am personally waiting for Ladybird to get good, although it irks me that the project is starting to become dirtied by being adjacent to DHH. Still, at the end of the day every major browser has rotten associations so pick your poison I guess.

Definitely, I agree there should be proportions. But in general I’ve seen so many cartoonish UIs where it’s ALL space and as a result you end up having to drill down for functionality that could easily have been placed at the top level.

Then again, poor UI design is nothing new:

For this and other barf-inducing UI “designs”, check out (this mirror of) the Interface Hall of Shame. There are some really bad (i.e., good for a laugh) stinkers documented there, including entire sections on (at one time) Lotus Notes, QuickTime 4 and others. Some of them are reasonable UI design, but with stupidity embedded into them.

Unfortunately the original site went defunct long ago and only this partial archive is available. But it’s still worth it for the laughs (not to mention twitches for those who had to deal with this junk in the past). Here are a few nuggets to whet (or is it kill?) your appetite…

…nuff said…

Think about this one…

*sigh*

For our Mac users.

Going too far...

And this “translation”…

…and it all fairness there’s also a link on this page to an Interface Hall of Fame (which I understand predates the Hall of Shame).

I like https://zen-browser.app/. It’s a Firefox based browser with some really cool UI ideas. Tab folders, quick access tabs, workspaces, popover tabs, are all great things I use daily.
