Struggling to pull out the subject in this photo

Curious to see how you guys tackle this photo. I’m still very new to darktable and I’m finding it difficult to pull the subject out from the background. Is there anything I can do while processing the photo?

Thanks.

shamelessly leveraging the old rule-of-third to draw eye attention to … eyes

cranking up RL-deblur for more details against the blurry surrounding.

Beautiful!

If you want to pull out the subject, concentrate on it. Go near, let it be right exposed and colourful.

So your version says as well, It’s near the limits but I like it that way in this case.

Selective masking and stuff.

Why not a FotoSketcher blending as well.

Didn’t do too much. Using your jpg and gimp.
Cropped to the fox, Auto levels, Duplicated the layer and set to Soft Light mode, then sharpened with less than 2 radius
