The edit button (pencil) has disappeared from my options:
Apparently not a Moderator action.
Anyone know why and how to reset it?
thx

No idea why, or no solution
But I noticed the same yesterday.
Probably because of the spam we’ve seen recently. First, they post some nonsense, but at first sight acceptable text, and once the post appears, reolace the text with spam.
Same here.
@darix turned it off to prevent spam, it turns out. Mystery solved.
Just noticed that myself. Since I tend to post and see flaws, I often re-edit my posts. Hopefully the spammers can be kept in check so that we can get the re-edit feature back.
I’m an admin in a different forum. This is something we also had to do against spam, but we were able to adjust to prevent edits after X amount of time. Something like 15min should be enough for folks to fix typos.
you basically want the opposite. you want to block edits for X amount so they cant get their spam in quickly.
In any case we will think about reenabling editing at some point.
Very nice of y’all.
Until then the only way to “edit” a prior post is to reply to one’s own post hopefully with perfect grammar, spelling and BBcode.
You could proof read your post before you submit it. Enable spell checking. Use a grammar add-on.
I’m 85 and not too mentally agile.
For people like me, the system is now user-hostile thanks to y’all.
There has to be a better way rather than arbitrarily disabling editing, apparently without notice!
Now I find that, if I reply to myself by selecting the whole post, the system automatically removes the quote from my reply.
TTFN.
Dude if you dont calm down you will get your next timeout. And you can start thinking about how many you might have left.
Maybe so, Mica, but being a lazy filter guy, I tend to, well, fumble things more often than not (not to mentions see errors in my retouches that can be allowed to stand). lol
Only human. Perfection is for the bots.
meant to say cannot be allowed to stand; see? lolololol
Damn; way too fast on the reply key trigger.
I’m not complaining: what needs to be done to make the moderating task easier needs to be done. But, proofreading…
Quite apart from age and acuity, I find that proofreading one’s own work is often doomed. We read what we expect to see, and we read what we think we wrote. It’s odd: errors I just can’t see in the preview window become glaring once posted! Sometimes not even then. Sometimes when glancing again some time or days later.
So yes, we are but fallible humans. And everything I write should have “E&OE.” It used to be seen on invoices, etc, and meant “errors and omissions excepted.” For my work it means errors and omissions expected!
Spam is a hard problem to solve. Discourse has a lot of default settings to discourage it but nothing is perfect. Making “valid” posts and then editing into spam later is a clever way around a lot of the normal measures.
I run a forum that’s over two decades old and the spam problem go so bad well over a decade ago that we had to disallow user sign ups without manually having a mod approve them. It’s not a public forum for any specific thing like this place is, so it didn’t matter a lot in some ways.
Captchas, email verification, “human readability”, paid spam filter measures, pretty much anything that’s been tried has lost to the spam wars. I’ve seen less than a handful of spam posts in my time here, so I think things are going relatively well. Give some leniency on the mods and admins because it is not an easy or fun problem to deal with.
Damn you, spam bots and my own inability to proofread!
Thank you, this is what i hoped to read after almost 11 years of doing this and (I think) providing a pretty smooth ride.
But I guess its good to know that some still don’t think we know what we are doing.
