This is one of my favorite pictures I took this year. I tried to make it look more filmic looking and contrasty. I feel like maybe the grass on the background is a bit noisy and takes away from the foreground. I would be interested what you guys can do with the picture

This is a great photo and the various crops people have made change it so much. Well done.
Yet another crop to tell a different narrative of two Taiwanese men focusing on a phone and a chess board.
I really like compositions that include the man on his phone too.
And I like your more washed out less contrasty look. Gives it a more vintage vibe!

Oops, not chess! It’s Xiangqi, or Chinese chess – similar vibes, just with different pieces and rules!
Love the colors on this one!
I struggled with Highlight reconstruction here. Colour Propagation produces some weird artifacts which disappeared when chosing Inpaint Opposed. An additional benefit is the nicer cloud structure 
My choice was to show all of the four men. Left and right the ones busy with their smartphones, in the center the two playing Xiangqi.
And this is the same processing, only Highlight Reconstruction set to Colour Propagation
