What are you listening to?

My taste in music is…eccletic. My library is pretty extensive but normally I just set VLC to randomly skip through it. One song is old blues, the next electronic, followed by rock or country.

The only thing that I consider a staple in my musical diet is the The Morning Show on KEXP. Unsurprisingly, it is a variety show. I have been listenting now for 25ish years and 3 different addresses. I was lucky that they were early adopters of streaming over the interwebs, since I moved away from the Seattle area in 2008.

BTW, could any of you recommend some soft instrumental music or bands ( with at least some percussions) that i could listen to while reading books?
Thanks

Between 2003 and 2005, I would often to listen to solopianoradio.com, which has meandering piano. Kind of generic but soothed my soul in troubled times. (Just had a listen to the free stream: the ad segment is much longer now.)

(Not sure if you were replying to me there…)
I’m not really a fan of piano.
I’m looking for something a bit like Portishead without lyrics.
I’ve been combing bandcamp to find something but always end up with that doesn’t fit. Eithehr too lively or too fast.

Did someone already suggest Brian Eno?

Here’s a sequel to that one…

Is there anyone that sounds like Portishead these days?

I find that The Olympians (ie Sirens of Jupiter | The Olympians) and Ikebe Shakedown (ie Brushfire | Ikebe Shakedown) pair well Portishead, even though they do not sound all that similar.

I am not really confident this is what you are looking for, but its worth a mention

So trip-hop or downtiempo are the generes you want.

Elvin Bishop! Now, that’s a name from the past.

@raublekick a most excellent selection.

I might also try DJ Shadow - Entroducing and almost anything by Madlib. And MF DOOM - Special Herbs, all the volumes

One of the very best! Love that album and would definitely make it into my Desert Island Discs top 20.

How about nonsense lyrics like Cocteau Twins

Or Mogwai

Absolutely yes, though I prefer the “Excessive Ephemera” mix of it, which is much looser and more fun IMHO.

@TonyBarrett mogwai is awesome, good call.

I might also add Godspeed You Black Emperor!, my favorite F♯ A♯ ∞

I’ve not heard that mix.
I had a radio show back in my university days, and I used Stem/Long Stem for my jingle. That album will always have a special place in my heart.

Ninja Tune label have a 24/7 channel of their releases on the tube

Japan’s DJ Krush was also trip hop influenced

Oakenfold’s mix of Play Dead (mostly removing beats) is a powerhouse, I reckon

Dark Lady from the album Cold Krush Cuts hits the spot!
